Job Title: Radiation Safety Officer.

Type: 16 hours combined total per week; may increase due to additional RSO responsibilities.

Job Summary: FAR Group is looking for a successful and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a ‘Radiation Safety Officer’.

The candidate should have all the relevant education and experiences to perform the duties effectively and efficiently, and his responsibilities include the duties mentioned in this Job Description.

Requirements: The Candidate shall meet the minimum following requirements:

  • Meet the requirements in accordance with 10 CFR 35.50 or 10 CFR 35.57 or shall have been previously listed as the RSO on a Radioactive Materials License.
  • Must be qualified to be listed as RSO on each facility’s VHA Master Materials License (MML) Permit per VHA National Health Physics Program (NHPP) guidance and NUREG-1556 documents for a broad scope permit. Approval from NHPP shall be within fourteen (14) business days from contract award.
  • Mentor the ARSO in performing duties of the RSO to meet 10 CFR 35.50 training requirements and provide attestation if appropriate.
  • Shall be inclusive of all responsibilities of the RSO defined in National Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulatory guideline 10 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 35.24 and in accordance with 10 CFR 20 and 35.

Duties: The Candidate will undertake the following duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Attend, take minutes, and provide any necessary materials for all quarterly Radiation Safety Meetings.
  • Support a culture of radiation safety.
  • Promote reduction of radiation exposures using principles of ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable).
  • Provide radiation safety guidance to Nuclear Medicine personnel in the development of new therapeutic protocols.
  • Review all written directives.
  • Provide services in conjunction with the ARSO for all Y-90 radioembolization therapies and participate similarly in all Nuclear Medicine therapies including inpatient and outpatient I-131 therapies, Ra-223and Lu-177, if staffing permits.
  • Audit Radiation Oncology Program on an annual basis (Hines VAMC only) and present to the Radiation Safety Committee.
  • Identify radiation safety problems and stop unsafe operations.
  • Assist services in implementing procedures to ensure compliance with the facility radiation safety policies and permit conditions and that licensed material shall be properly secured.
  • Ensure completion of annual personnel training commensurate with the individual’s duties regarding use of licensed material or x-ray generating equipment.
  • Ensure Radiation Safety Committee approval/disapproval of applications for new authorized users and/or new uses of radioactive materials occurs in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure a robust program exists for monitoring personnel radiation exposures including badge distribution, reporting and training. Ensure maintenance of records of such monitoring and distribution to appropriate departments.
  • Ensure approval of any radioisotope orders for Research AUs while verifying that the authorized user permit limits shall not be exceeded
