Recovery Specialist

To provide recovery support and peer coaching to program participants. This includes assessment, and evaluation of individuals with an Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) assisting participants with improving their health and wellness, living a self-directed life, and reaching their full potential. The Recovery Specialists will work with individuals to support and strengthen their capacity to engage in their personal recovery.

Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the identified consumer with an OUD, develop a Recovery Plan which should include culturally competent and relevant services that identifies goals with measurable objectives, assesses strengths, can be used to work towards those goals, identifies barriers that can inhibit goal attainment, and monitors the progress made attaining those goals;
  • Educates consumers on how to appropriately navigate treatment, social service and recovery support systems;
  • Provides recovery support services based on the individual’s preference and his/her assessed needs, empowering them to make self-determined and self-directed choices about their recovery pathway;
  • Supports individuals as they move through the stages of change to encourage them in their recovery;
  • Assists individuals with identifying, accessing and participating in recovery support services in the community and with the recovery community;
  • Works collaboratively with the Case Manager to ensure the individual engages in services up to one year;
  • Serves as a positive role model by sharing experiential knowledge, hope, and skills;
  • Maintains relationships with the individual in order to assist him/her in the treatment engagement and retention process;
  • Reinforces, guides, and ensures the individual that recovery is possible, and is built on multiple strengths, coping abilities, and the resources of each individual;
  • Assists the individual participating in STAR with gaining skills and resources needed to initiate and maintain recovery;
  • Assists in establishing and sustaining a social and physical environment supportive of recovery;
  • Advocates for appropriate and effective community treatment and recovery;
  • Provides support with face to face sessions and/or telephone support based on individual’s personal choice; Maintain follow-up one year after starting STAR program;
  • Helps individuals maintain healthy community, family and social functioning.
  • Maintains relationships with resources and treatment providers ensuring navigation and linkages as appropriate;
  • Monitors effectiveness of program by inputting data into the EHR and the data collection program by the Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services;
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary collaborative meetings regularly;
  • Maintains a caseload of twenty (20) consumers;
  • Provides on call support on a shared basis; and
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of sobriety and experience in the principles of recovery that assist individuals to improve their health and wellness;
  • A minimum of a High School diploma or equivalency required; College degree preferred;
  • Must attend a three (3) day DMHAS State mandated training that delineates peer role functions, competencies, responsibilities and includes an orientation to DMHAS multiple treatment initiatives and all other required trainings;
  • Ability to effectively work with people of diverse cultural backgrounds and races;
  • Ability to effectively work as a team member;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle for self-transportation
  • Computer literacy
  • Bi-lingual a plus

COVID-19 considerations:
