The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for a Recreation & Athletics Specialist 4 located at the Washington State Penitentiary.
The Department of Corrections, as a partner in the criminal justice system, enhances public safety, administers criminal sanctions and programs in accordance with the law and provides leadership for the future of corrections in Washington State.
The Department consists of the Office of the Secretary, Prisons Division, Community Corrections Division, Administrative Services Division, Health Services Division, Communications Department and Risk Management Department. The Washington State Penitentiary is comprised of 3 Close Custody Units, 3 Special Housing Units, 2 Intensive Management Units, 2 Medium Unit, 2 Minimum Housing Units and a Hospital. In all, WSP houses approximately 2,000 offenders and employees approximately 1,000 staff.
Duty:
Plans, organizes, and directs facility recreation programs, to Include Hobby Craft programs.
Tasks include:
Provides schedule for outside recreation and gymnasium access for Incarcerated Individual population.
Develops intramural recreation events and schedules tournaments.
Manages fee-based weight program and ensures policy compliance,
Supports living unit tournaments to include holiday and special event activities.
Develops and maintains institutional Wellness programs available in the recreation areas.
Covers Recreations Specialist 3 positions when employees are absent or on leave to maintain facility recreation programs.
Develops and maintains facility Hobby Craft programs, where available.
Maintains current list of vendors with addressees for hobby craft and ln-cell curio programs.
Works in collaboration with custody area managers lo make necessary changes or diversions from established or planned recreation events in each designated area.
Orders and maintains recreation supplies, while maintaining budget requirements.
Duty:
Trains, supervises, and evaluates performance of Recreation Specialist 3 employees.
Tasks include:
Develops work schedules for all recreation staff to commensurate with institution needs regarding Incarcerated Individuals recreation programs and communicates with custody area managers for feedback on operations.
Trains Recreation Specialist 3's in performance expectations, maintains monthly performance reviews in working files, and completes performance evaluations as required.
Using coaching and mentoring lo improve the performance of Recreation Specialist 3's,
Duty:
Collaborates with Custody to complete and/or maintain required security documentation and procedures for facility recreation and hobby craft program areas.
Tasks include:
Ensure security documentation to include daily equipment and daily equipment checks; bi-annual area searches; monthly contraband/evidence logs; monthly post order signature sheets; etc. are completed and turned in by due date.
Works with area Shift Office Managers to complete required tasks or to report discrepancies
Ensures post orders are review-ed and addresses changes need.
Ensures Staff Accountability practices and requirements are in place for area personnel.
- -Demonstrated skills to write clearly, factually and concisely.
- -Demonstrated ability to recall detailed information, and maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time.
- -Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills in routine and emergency situations.
- -Knowledge of recreation administration.
- -Knowledge of several fields of recreation activities to include athletics, fitness, music, and arts and crafts.
- -Ability to manage a diverse staff to include Recreation/Athletic Specialists, Correctional Officers and Support Staff.
Preferred/Desired
A Bachelor's degree involving major study in either (a) recreation or therapeutic recreation; (b) music, drama, or physical education, or (c) psychology, sociology or education with a minor in recreation, physical education, music or drama and three years of professional experience, including one year in a supervisory capacity.
OR
Three years of experience as a Recreation/Athletics Specialist 3.

This position may be allocated for telework. Work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at that time. Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner, to take proper care all state-issued equipment, and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite. Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires, to potentially include components of the onboarding process. Some offices will have a “drop in” area available, however, a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
