The Town of Castle Rock has an outstanding opportunity for a Recreation Specialist (Aquatics) in our Parks and Recreation department. This position organizes and coordinates aquatic programs and sites. This Recreation Specialist is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, directing and evaluating a diverse range of recreation activities and events, and leading activities. They will perform duties in a manner consistent with the stated values of the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs lead-level duties that include instructing, assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; monitoring standards; coordinating activities; allocating personnel; and providing feedback
  • Assists in the management of the aquatic facilities; resolves staff and participant problems
  • Supervises children and other program participants enrolled in activities; provides appropriate guidance as needed
  • Communicates with citizens and responds to their inquiries and concerns regarding programs, instructors, or facilities
  • Plans, organizes, and implements various activities, programs, and events
  • Plans, organizes and implements learn to swim program, and registration
  • Creates, develops and implements classes and programs; assists in recruiting and hiring contract instructors, and determines schedules and fees
  • Creates, manages, and teaches classes for special needs populations, i.e., pregnancy, disabilities, senior citizens
  • Assists in preparing and monitoring annual aquatic budget
  • Skill in teaching aquatics classes, utilizing exercise equipment
  • Prepares biweekly time sheets, purchase orders/requests, and vouchers
  • Prepares vouchers and purchase orders; purchases supplies and equipment. Negotiates with vendors
  • Performs disaster drills; administers First Aid and performs CPR when needed
  • Performs clerical functions
  • Manages aquatic facility rentals
  • Cleans recreation sites; checks van for maintenance and safety
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: Two (2) years of professional experience in the aquatic field that provides broad knowledge of all facets of public recreation and available community resources, to include experience in the administrative aspects of the work; or any equivalent combination

Licenses and/or Certifications Required:

The following certifications will need to be obtained within 30 days of hire:
  • CPR and First Aid Training Certificate
  • Lifeguard Certification
The following certifications will need to be obtained within 90 days of hire:
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification
  • American Red Cross CPR and First Aid Instructor Certification
  • CPO, AFO Certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of principles of effective administration, to include planning, coordinating, evaluating, and supervising
  • Knowledge of the characteristics and needs of the target population
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of short-to-long-range recreational program planning
  • Knowledge of Social Service guidelines and regulations regarding childcare facilities
  • Knowledge of the principles of budget administration
  • Skill in both written and oral communications for effective expression and clarity
  • Skill in teaching aquatic classes, utilizing exercise equipment
  • Skill in operating a multi-passenger vehicle safely
  • Skill in performing and instructing CPR and First Aid
  • Ability to respond to citizen complaints/concerns with considerable tact and courtesy
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make independent decisions in accordance with established Town policies and procedures
  • Ability to use a variety of advisory data and information, such as equipment manuals, financial reports, handbooks, catalogs, and studies, user guides and manuals, state regulations, and Town policy manuals and Code of Ordinances
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, support staff, contracted personnel, volunteers, and other departments with which the position interacts
  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; ability to utilize principles of fractions; ability to interpret graphs
  • Ability to perform coordinated movements involving placing and turning motions, operating a computer terminal, pool equipment, recreation equipment, cash register

Supplemental Information

Physical Demands:

  • Occasional physical work lifting no more than 10 pounds
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking and standing
  • Occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and stop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and office equipment
  • Vision for reading, recording and interpreting information
  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens

Work Environment :
  • Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment

Equipment Used :
  • Uses general modern office equipment, to include, keyboard, 10-key adding machines, and telephones
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
