TITLE: Recreation Therapist FT

MAJOR PURPOSE: Responsible for assisting with the implementation of a therapeutic recreation program which improves the quality of life for all residents of the facility.

TITLE OF SUPERVISOR: Director of Recreation Services

TITLE OF IMMEDIATE SUBORDINATES: None

FLSA: Non-Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Recreation Therapist certified in the State of Connecticut in accordance with the Public Health Code.

2. Ability to read, write and comprehend English; ability to follow oral and written instructions.

3. Interest in the therapeutic needs of the aged and the chronically ill with the ability to work with the elderly.

4. Ability to work with supervisors, co-workers and facility staff in the performance of duties.

5. Ability to observe proper safety and sanitary techniques.

6. Ability to work hours as scheduled based on the requirements of the position/assignment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in an appropriately lighted and ventilated environment. This position may result in your being exposed to blood/body fluids.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must be able to move intermittently throughout the day, proper body mechanics required—bending, stooping, turning, stretching, reaching above the shoulders and occasional lifting are involved.

2. Must be able to cope with the mental, emotional and physical stress of the position.

3. Must be able to observe, listen and communicate effectively.

4. Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, support agencies, and outside agencies.

5. Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.

6. Must be able to lift, transfer and pivot residents.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

1. Plans, organizes and directs recreational service programs designed to motivate, stimulate, restore abilities and improve the quality of life for all residents.

2. Works with residents at bedside with specially designed activities.

3. Assists with the transportation of residents to areas where programs are being conducted.

4. Assists with the documentation of resident participation and progress.

OTHER DUTIES:

1. Assists with supply inventory, planning of purchases for the department and organization of the activity area.

2. Assists with resident supervision during outings.

3. Assists with writing, typing and/or assembling the monthly newsletter.

4. Assesses all new admissions to document historical interests, hobbies and abilities, as well as current limitations, prognosis and family/resident expectations.

5. Writes notes in the resident's care plan and participates actively in resident care conferences.

6. Implements required programs, maintains thorough records and achieves individual and facility progress with activities of daily living and other restorative programs.

7.Performs other duties as assigned by director.

EXPECTATIONS:

1. Presents a neat appearance with a pleasant speaking voice and personality. Must be punctual.

2. Works with a minimum of supervision.

3. Discusses any problems, needs or concerns which arise with the Administrator.

4. Attends in-service educational classes and on-the-job training programs as directed.

5. Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and a positive image throughout the facility.

6. Treats people with respect; works with integrity and ethically; upholds organizational values and mission statement; supports affirmative action and respects diversity.

7. Understands and upholds Residents’ Bill of Rights and holds all resident information confidential

8. Understands responsibilities concerning infection control, safety, accident and fire prevention.

9. Discusses any problems, needs or concerns which arise with the Director of Recreation Services.

10. Assumes responsibility in supporting the director in promoting and maintaining positive employee relations and effective communications among facility staff.
