Recycling Center Manager Job at Goodwill Gulf Coast
Mission Contribution: Create jobs for people with disabilities and others with barriers to employment by managing recycling center operations. Also, helps promote Goodwill’s commitment to protecting the environment through recycling and other sustainability initiatives.
Function: To manage the Mobile County Recycling Center through efficient processing of materials while maintaining a clean, productive and safe work area.
Essential Functions: (must be able to perform these functions, with or without a reasonable accommodation).
1. Provides world class customer service including effective communication with internal and external customers.
2. Oversees the operation of the Mobile County Recycling Center.
- Ensures a clean, safe, and clutter free center, inside and outside.
- Keeps the donation area organized and hazard free, using authorized containers.
- Efficiently handles and processes recyclable material according to established procedures.
d. Ensures bales, gaylords, or pallets are properly and securely prepared for transport.
e. Ensures that materials are moving through the facility efficiently
f. Supervises the Production Manager, Shift Leaders, Recycle Techs, Truck Driver, and volunteers (including those providing court-ordered community services).
g. Implements quality control measures to ensure that materials meet the specifications as laid out by buyers. Ensures that adequate sorting procedures are in place to minimize contamination.
h. Oversees the shipment of recyclable materials to mills and ensures that trucks are loaded properly.
i. Collects, organizes, and tracks operational metrics for the facility including but not limited to labor, traffic counts, material types and volume, outgoing shipments, volunteer service and training hours.
j. Creates policies and procedures for the collection, processing, and shipping of recyclable materials.
k. Develops, trains, and enforces safety procedures that include but are not limited to the facility space, recycling equipment, forklifts and Bobcat, and volunteer and student activities.
l. Follows procedures and ensures proper tracking and reporting of the court-ordered community service worker programs.
m. Ensures that preventative maintenance and repairs are carried out, on all equipment, according to manufacturer recommendations and in a manner that protects the validity of warranties.
n. Ensures the facility and grounds are clean and well maintained.
3. Communicates regularly with supervisor, other leadership staff, and partners as appropriate keeping them informed of progress, issues and status of facility operations.
4. Researches equipment/ services for purchase and maintenance based on product specifications, price, and performance.
- Stays current on conservation and recycling issues by participating in on-going training and professional development opportunities.
- Shares information learned with Goodwill leadership, co-workers and partners in an effort to enhance, expand and improve organizational impact and mission focused service delivery.
- Organizes and inputs data, preparing a variety of reports and summaries to demonstrate program activity and efficiency.
8. Stays informed of community, agency, and program information through inter-office communications, and attendance at staff meetings.
- Acts as a positive and professional role model when representing Goodwill.
10. Regular attendance and adherence to scheduled hours, as outlined in Goodwill’s policy, is required.
11. Other duties as assigned.
Skills, knowledge and abilities: (these are required to enable job holder to perform the essential functions of the job).
1. Must be able understand and perform the basic operation of recycling equipment and be able to train others.
2. Must have knowledge of recyclable materials and/or grades of various products and how this impacts processing cost and resale of items.
3. Must be able to interact cordially and productively with a variety of people.
4. Must be able to market Goodwill and explain the mission to the general public.
5. Ability to use general office equipment and Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint and Publisher)
6. Must possess good organizational and time management skills.
7. Must be able to take initiative, make decisions and work well with little supervision.
8. Must be able to keep information confidential.
9. Must be able to read, write and communicate clearly in English.
10. Must be able to maintain an effective working relationship with, and among employees and trainees, while motivating them to their best performance.
11. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
12. Ability to function in a hectic work environment with occasional periods of high stress.
13. Must be forklift certified or get such certifications within 30 days of hire.
14. Must obtain and retain First Aid/CPR/AED certification and respond to and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency at the worksite according to Goodwill Safety Policies & Procedures.
15. Must have a valid driver’s license for at least 3 years, liability automobile insurance and be insurable through the agency’s insurance carrier.
16. Must be at least 21 years of age.
Experience and Education
- Experience in manufacturing, production, and material handling.
- Experience using Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Minimum of two years of management/supervisory experience preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience in recycling, environmental services, salvage, or waste management, preferred.
- Experience training individuals with disabilities preferred.
- Strong problem-solver and decision-maker.
Physical Requirements:
1. Must be able to push, bend, and reach.
2. Must be able to lift 40 pounds with assistance.
3. Must be able to push wheeled hoppers exceeding 100 pounds.
4. Must be able to engage in prolonged standing.
5. Must be able to tolerate heat, dust and excessive noise.
Working Conditions/Hazards:
Most work is conducted in a warehouse. Exposure to dust and loud equipment when in the processing area, and possible extreme heat or cold when working outside.
