Recycling & Trash Services Operator Job at City of Wilmington, NC

Drive and/or work on a CDL truck route to pick up and dump carts, vegetative debris, animals, large household items, and recycling in a manner that is safe and responsible. This is accomplished by driving a daily route and disposing of loads at appropriate site using the truck ejection system. Work assignments are made on a daily basis where needed. Other duties include exiting packer and assisting workers at most stops, assisting other drivers, delivering carts to residents, enlisting the assistance of others, working on City holidays and at festivals, delivering carts or barrels for special events, and cleaning vehicles as directed.
Recycling & Trash Services Operators are required to work most City holidays and support cleanup efforts for City sponsored events and festivals. This positions is also considered essential and may be required to work before, during and after inclement weather events.
Perform materials collection by working with, or as, a Solid Waste Worker to collect trash and recycling, ensuring only recyclable items are in bins, collecting bulky items from households, transport bulky items to scrap dealer, collecting vegetation from residences, ensuring workers on back of truck are safe and wearing proper safety gear, and cleaning of truck.
Formal Education: High School diploma or GED.
Experience: Minimum one (1) year of experience in materials collection or other closely related outdoor manual-labor position.
Notes: A driving history check is required for all candidates selected for hire. Selected candidates will also be required to complete a post-offer drug screen and job related physical assessment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Exerting over 100 lbs. occasionally, 50-100 lbs. frequently, or up to 20-50 lbs. constantly.
WORKING CONDITIONS: This position generally works in a vehicle and outdoors.

Health Benefits are offered to employees working at least 30 hours per week.
Health Insurance - The City offers two options for health coverage: a standard PPO plan and a High Deductible Health Plan with an associated Health Savings Account. Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment for employees and their eligible dependents. Both you and the City contribute to the overall cost of coverage.
Dental Insurance - Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Employees, their spouse and dependent children are eligible for coverage.
Life Insurance - The city pays to provide coverage valued at one times your annual salary. Supplemental insurance is available for employees to purchase. Optional coverage for dependents is also available for purchase.
Retirement:
- NC Local Government Retirement System - All benefits eligible employees make a mandatory 6% contribution every pay period.
- Deferred Compensation – The city contributes an amount equal to 4.5% of the annual salary to either the 401(k) or 457 plans regardless of employee contribution. Employees may choose to contribute additional money to the deferred compensation plans, without a match from the City, within the IRS guidelines.
- Sick Leave - 12 days accrued each year
- Holidays - 12 paid holidays annually
- Paid Parental Leave - Six weeks of paid leave for the birth, adoption or placement of a child (must run concurrently with FMLA).
- Part-Time Employees will earn paid leave benefits on a pro-rated basis.
