About the Study

We have an opening at the Center for Care Delivery and Outcomes Research for a full-time Research Coordinator. The applicant will work on three health services research studies. Study 1 (SCOUTT): The goals and objectives for this program will focus on implementing a comprehensive plan to train interdisciplinary teams in Primary Care, General Mental Health, Pain Clinics and SUD Specialty Care clinics to deliver a stepped care model of medication treatment for opioid use disorder to provide treatment services around the Veteran at his/her preferred point of care. Teams receive a multi-component intervention that includes site visits and facilitation calls. Study 2 (Post Hospital Rehabilitation for Veterans with Cognitive Impairment): The applicant will work primarily on veteran recruitment, telehealth intervention support, survey assessment, and veteran/care partner interviews. Study 3 (INTEGRATE): This mixed-methods study will examine system factors that impact delivery of evidence-based psychotherapies for depression in VA as well as explore the impact of therapist factors and patient perspectives. Findings will inform an intervention framework that will prioritize barriers on which to intervene and identify promising solutions.

These studies are being conducted in the Center for Care Delivery and Outcomes Research, a VA Health Services Research Center of Innovation within the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. This position is located in Minneapolis and is not a remote position.

The Study Teams

SCOUTT: Princess Ackland, PhD LP, MSPH and Hildi Hagedorn, PhD LP are members of the Minneapolis Team and National Facilitators. Dr. Ackland is a health services researcher, licensed clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine. Dr. Hagedorn is an experienced health services researcher, licensed clinical psychologist and Associate Professor of Psychiatry. The study team includes Adam Gordon, MD (Principal Investigator) from VA Salt Lake City Health Care System and an investigator from VA Palo Alto Health Care System. The study team works closely with the Director of the VA National Mental Health Program—Substance Use Disorders.

Post Hospital Rehabilitation for Veterans with Cognitive Impairment: Allison Gustavson, DPT, PhD is the Principal Investigator. She is Assistant Professor of Medicine and practicing physical therapist.

INTEGRATE: Princess Ackland, PhD LP, MSPH is the Principal Investigator. The INTEGRATE Team includes 5 investigators, 5 statisticians/data managers and 1 consultant. The study team is working closely with the Director of Psychotherapy and other partners in VA Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparing study-related materials, including forms for the institutional review board.
  • Set up meetings and conference calls.
  • Conduct research study assessments over the telephone, in accordance with research protocols.
  • Review and extract data from medical records. Recruit subjects via telephone, collect data, enter and maintain a database of outcome data collected.
  • Verify data for accuracy, per established study procedures.
  • Conduct library work, manage literature searches, and prepare bibliographies.
  • Generate general study-related correspondence and conduct phone calls.
  • Assist with making study-related purchases, and booking investigator travel.
  • Alert the Principal Investigators of data collection/protocol breeches, inconsistencies, or other problems that may arise within the studies, as well as suggesting methods of correction.
  • Assist in the preparation of manuscripts and presentation of the data. Activities may include helping to create posters for professional presentations; creating tables and charts; editing scholarly manuscripts; and assisting with formatting and uploading files, etc.
  • Assist in the preparation of grant proposals. Activities may include requesting, tracking and gathering materials from study investigators; creating tables and figures; assisting with formatting and uploading files; etc.
  • Work on other research studies as directed and as time allows, including funded studies originating at other VA facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters (MA/MS/MPH) degree in public health, sociology, psychology or related allied health field from an accredited college or university or a Bachelors (BA/BS) degree in public health, sociology, psychology or related allied health field from an accredited college or university with at least 3 years of research experience, 1 year of which included research coordinator responsibilities. Bachelors candidates must have an undergraduate GPA ≥ 3.0.
  • Prior research experience should include data collection and data storage, institutional review board application processes, and knowledge of descriptive statistical procedures. Experience with qualitative methodology and observational or health services studies is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel as well as reference management tools and virtual meeting platforms. Experience with qualitative software (e.g., NVivo) is preferred.
  • Strong creative problem-solving skills with experience managing multiple tasks and project elements on varying timelines/deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in study coordination, project management, or administrative work.
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices, human subjects protection, and federal regulations related to clinical research.
  • Applies initiative when working independently and collaboration as part of a team. Must be a U.S. citizen.

Compensation

  • GS-9 Health Science Specialist position with a starting salary of $59,102.
  • Position will be funded full-time with an initial appointment of 13 months. This position may be renewable after 13 months pending research project funding and performance review.
