Under direct supervision, acquires skills and knowledge of professional concepts in research data analysis. Works on small projects or segments of projects with limited scope and complexity.
The research data analyst will join the UCSF Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science and work closely with a collaborative team of established investigators and faculty to apply data science techniques to support quality improvement projects and research studies related to clinical outcomes, health services, and education/learners outcomes.

The successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills with desirable interpersonal communication skills working with different stakeholders including faculty members and research team. The candidate will be self-directed with developing solutions to problems that require basic data analyst tasks, but also with a growth mindset to support and lead future projects that require advanced analytics with provided supervision and guidance.

The research data analyst under supervision will support clinicaland education and health services research activities using database extraction, cleaning, and analysis to address questions related to health care equity, patient-reported outcomes, and learners outcomes.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care. It is the only campus in the 10-campus UC system dedicated exclusively to the health sciences.

The Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science (DPTRS) is a clinical department within the School of Medicine, and includes 35 faculty members, 150 DPT graduate students, Orthopedic Residents, Acute Care Residents, Neurology Residents, PhD students, and volunteer clinical faculty members. The DPT program is a joint program with San Francisco State University (adding another 5 faculty members). The DPTRS also operates three large faculty practice clinics with an additional one opening in 2024 and a Health and Wellness Center. This includes an Outpatient Clinical Faculty Practice and a Health and Wellness Center at Mission Bay. The Department operates additional Outpatient Faculty Practices in Mount Zion and Lakeshore, and has research laboratories across three campus locations at SFGH, Parnassus, and Mission Bay.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in related area and / or equivalent experience / training and / or with a major in a related field of quantitative science (e.g. economics, finance, statistics or engineering).
  • Proficiency extracting and cleaning data and abstracting data concepts from electronic health record databases and performing descriptive statistical analysis.
  • Strong writing and oral presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of study design and descriptive statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of database creation and management.
  • Experience in data management in a health field, exposure to quality data.
  • Experience and ability to work and interact positively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Highly organized and able to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Conducts handling of data in accordance with protocols and compliance with regulations on Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • High personal motivation, self-management, ability to handle tasks requiring a high degree of attention to detail, and an ability to work under supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in data science, epidemiology, economics, finance, statistics or engineering.
  • Experience in collecting, managing, and cleaning data sets from multiple sources for the development of reports and statistical information.
  • Experience coding in any of the following: SQL, R, Stata, or other statistical software packages or Tableau.
