Description:

SR1 is hiring a RESEARCH FARM MANAGER that will support and sustain the future of farming and local food production to eliminate food insecurity in Mississippi. The RESEARCH FARM MANAGER will lead and manage all farm production tasks and responsibilities at SR1’s Development and Research Center facilities with a primary focus towards high quality crop yield and production, innovative field-based research, and provide support to the education, communication, and development of the organization.

The RESEARCH FARM MANAGER will report directly to SR1’s Agricultural and Food Science Department Director to develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate SR1’s organic and sustainable agriculture and farm practices.

Applicants should be highly self-motivated, hardworking, and committed to organic and sustainable agricultural research and practices. All candidates must be prepared to work in a professional environment, complete tasks carefully and in a timely manner, and coordinate and execute the various tasks essential to produce and deliver high quality crops, including but not limited to: planting, pruning, mowing, irrigation, harvesting, and processing various crops.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Coordinate, conduct, routine wellness checks equipment (i.e., tractor(s), seeders, and other equipment) of crops and overall farm sites and maintain an organized record of crop production, agriculture research parameters measured, and in-field events
• Operate small and large-scale farming equipment to care for crops and coordinate routine maintenance schedules for farm

• Research and make recommendations regarding practices such as soil preparation and sampling, water quality new and/or replacement plantings, changes in crop testing, growing and harvesting techniques for various crops, etc. variety and/or cultural practices
• Consult with venders and community partners to curriculum development, programming and training, professional ensure adequate supply of and to enable sufficient development opportunities, etc. purchasing of crops
• Create reports for equipment, materials, costs, and promotion of departmental programming production in a timely manner and keep records and prepare estimates of needs
• Research and make timely recommendations to Agricultural and Food Science Department Director regarding equipment and supply needs

• Operate small and large-scale farming equipment to care for crops and coordinate routine maintenance schedules for farm equipment (i.e., tractor(s), seeders, and other equipment)
• Create project-based field experiences and activities for beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers that provide experiential learning opportunities that showcase agriculture practices such as soil preparation and sampling, water quality testing, growing and harvesting techniques for various crops, etc.

• Assist with educational and outreach activities through curriculum development, programming and training, professional development opportunities, etc.

• Assist SR1’s Marketing Team with preparing media for quality promotion of departmental programming

• Other duties may/will be assigned on an as-needed basis

The RESEARCH FARM MANAGER is preferred to have knowledge and skills to develop and research agriculture and food science topics, and to implement sustainable and organic agriculture practices with emphasis on growing cultural significant leafy greens (i.e., collard and mustard greens) using various agriculture methods and techniques: conservation tillage, planting via transplanting and direct sowing, hoop/tunnel houses (covered structures), organic and sustainable pest and weed management and fertilizing practices, manual and mechanical harvesting techniques.

It is desired that the RESEARCH FARM MANAGER have knowledge and understanding of safe work practices, tools, cleaning techniques, and personal protective equipment to meet food safety requirements.

The RESEARCH FARM MANAGER should also be a collaborative problem solver that can communicate well with other project directors, team leads and SR1 staff as well as have the ability to implement and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Requirements and Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in agricultural science, plant science, horticulture, agronomy, or related field.

• Minimum 2 years of experience in crop production or agricultural related food science
• Strong organizational and good written and verbal communication skills

• Physical stamina to conduct farm and in-field responsibilities - must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and and stand and/or walk for up to 8 hours daily
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Software (i.e., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

• Must have dependable transportation

• Work in all weather conditions

• Travel will be required for farm visits and professional development trainings and workshops

• Must be able to work Monday-Friday and weekends and stand and/or walk for up to 8 hours daily evenings as needed

Additional Information:

PAY RANGE: $40,000-$50,000

Pay: $40,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
