Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is the care of bleeder (hemophiliac) and normal animals housed at FOBRL, a complex animal research laboratory and breeding facility for both pigs and dogs. The employee performs animal husbandry duties on a daily basis, including the feeding of special diets to study animals and the care of pregnant and nursing animals and neonates. The position works with hemophilia and all of its associated conditions, and will observe all animals daily for signs of hemorrhage, illness, or injury. The technician has some animal breeding duties, including the recognition of heat cycles and assisting with breeding. The technician performs routine medical care such as medicated baths, ear cleaning, and the administration of treatments and medications, under the direction of a veterinarian. The technician is responsible for record keeping, such as temperatures logs and animal identification, disinfecting the animal quarters, performing some minor repairs, use of veterinary and other lab equipment, and the training of new animal husbandry employees. The research technician must have the availability to work rotating evenings, weekends, holidays and during inclement weather – this is essential in order to care for the colonies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Demonstrated ability to function both independently and with a team, efficiently, with a complete understanding of laboratory programs and goals .
- Some knowledge and experience of veterinary procedures and administering medical treatments, such as vaccinations, injectable, and oral medications.
- Ability to identify animal health issues.
- Some experience in animal care and husbandry, including: feeding, watering and proper handling requirements of dogs.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Knowledge of basic veterinary lab equipment.
- Experience in large animal research.
- Experience in emergency veterinary medicine and/or hemophilia.
- Veterinary technician license.
- AALAS certification.
- Pig experience.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to work with animals weighing up to 700 pounds with or without accommodation.
