The Respiratory Therapist performs routine respiratory care procedures, varying in complexity. These include, but are not limited to preparation, administration and monitoring of medication and treatment modalities and gas therapy, ventilator support, spirometry and assistance with procedures as requested.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for respiratory care and treatment of patients at facility, with particular emphasis on post-anesthesia patients.
  • Responsible for observing and implementing policies and procedures that guide the respiratory care and treatment of patients.
  • Monitors all scheduled cases at the hospital for which respiratory care and treatment is anticipated.
  • Participates in the treatment of all patients that fall in the above criteria and coordinating such participation with the PACU, the ER/Med Surg units, and the Intensive Care Unit/Step-down unit.
  • Set up and administer all routine and complex respiratory therapy procedures to patients as prescribed by a physician.
  • Performs assessment of the patient, determining needs related to frequency and duration of treatment regimen ordered by the physician, and makes appropriate recommendations to the physician as needed.
  • Observes the response of patients to therapy, evaluates and records in patient chart.
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrates appropriate interpersonal skills to work productively with patients, families, staff and coworkers.
  • Demonstrates the spirit of the philosophy, mission, and values of the hospital through words and actions and implements them into departmental processes, programs, and the working environment.
  • Applies the principles and values of customer service and continuous quality improvement while performing day to day activities of the position.
  • Maintains and protects confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care, personnel and strategic issues. Adheres to Confidentiality Policy.
  • Maintains positive working relationships and fosters cooperative work environment. Adheres to the hospital’s compliance program.
  • Displays honesty and mutual respect when communicating with peers and other departments.
  • Follows through on problems that may compromise effective job performance by using appropriate chain of command.
  • Adheres to safety practices and meets requirements of National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

  • Must have completed a two or four year accredited program in Respiratory Therapy

Certification, Licensure

  • Current licensure in Respiratory Therapy from the State of Texas is required (RCD or RRT). BLS, ACLS, PALS certification required.

Experience

  • Two (2) years hospital related experience required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to work in high stress environment. Excellent communication skills required. Must possess knowledge of Microsoft Office and hospital related software.
