The Revisiting the Rochester Narrative Fellows will collaborate with each other and with Democrat and Chronicle journalists on a grant-funded project examining how key junctures in Rochester's past paved the way for racial and other disparities in the present-day, and how similar decisions might be made in the 2020s in ways that might lead to more racial equity in Rochester and Monroe County.

Areas of examination in summer 2023 will include decisions in transportation (highway construction in the 1960s and dismantlement more recently) and the impacts of those decisions on people, neighborhoods, housing, businesses and racial equity. The fellows will conduct historical research and interview and photograph/shoot local persons affected by important decisions, past and present, as well as talk to persons with expertise and perspective on the underlying issues. They might well participate in online discussions of their reporting and research.

Work will mix archival research with "curbside reporting." The fellows will work as part of a group of journalists focused on this ongoing project. Work output might include news stories, historical timelines, photo essays and documentary videography or shorter social media video suitable for Instagram Stories. The fellows will each have a supervising editor and peer mentors.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS:
  • Strong writing skills and a command of grammar and style.
  • Experience with social media, including Instagram Stories, as a tool to build audience and as a source for beat development.
  • Experience with and interest in multimedia, including video and podcasting.
  • A self-starter who owns the beat yet works collaboratively with others locally and regionally to meet common goals.
  • A journalist committed to values of fairness, diversity, inclusion and professionalism.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Working toward a bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience as a reporter/writer and/or photographer/videographer.
  • Proven experience with content management systems and social media channels.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don't limit your upload to a resume; show us what you've done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
  • Your resume - one to two pages
  • A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job
  • Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you've written or photographed/shot, produced, or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.
It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
