Job Overview

Communications Officer / SHE Operator works by following standard procedures under supervision. He/She receives and responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service within an industrial facility, dispatches private emergency response resources, initiates public emergency response resources, and monitors proprietary supervising station alarm systems.

Role and Responsibilities

Preparing the work

  • Check the safety and status of immediate work area
  • Check the status of daily schedules and orders

Training

  • Conduct basic emergency response system activation training
  • Conduct radio etiquette training for all facility personnel
  • Conduct training for communications personnel
  • Travel as necessary for fire and emergency response training and conferences

Drills

  • Participate in evacuation and shelter-in-place drills
  • Facilitate and participate in “What-If” drills
  • Facilitate and participate in Incident Command, Emergency Operations Center, Communications Center, and Emergency Response Team table-top, functional, and full-scale exercises.

Emergency Response

  • Operates a multi-line telephone system and radio dispatch console
  • Receive and respond to emergency service calls
  • Assigns priority to calls
  • Assigns communication resources during events
  • Monitors and takes appropriate action for fire alarm / proprietary supervising station alarm system activation
  • Monitors and takes appropriate action for gas alarms
  • Enacts emergency response plans and general operating guidelines
  • Execute emergency event algorithms
  • Track fire water and suppression system impairments.
  • Provide initial lifesaving and pre-arrival emergency action guidance to caller / emergency medical dispatch
  • Available as practical for 24/7 call-out

Inspections

  • Track fire water and suppression system impairments
  • Track facility life safety equipment impairments
  • Complete records of all signals, alarms, and events

Asset Management

  • Issue and manage hand-held portable radio devices
  • Issue and manage emergency response items

Other tasks as assigned

Skills and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED (General Education Development)
  • (Preferred) Associates Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in fire protection, emergency management, communications, or related field.
  • 3 to 5 years of municipal or industrial fire and emergency services communications / dispatch.
  • (Preferred) Previous experience in manufacturing or heavy industry.
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Operate various communications and dispatch software
  • Public Safety Telecommunicator NFPA 1061 (IFSAC / ProBoard | NPQ / DoD)
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness NFPA 472 (IFSAC / ProBoard | NPQ / DoD) or equivalent
  • ICS/NIMS IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-800
  • (Preferred) National Registry and Georgia Emergency Medical Technician
  • (Preferred) Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD)
  • (Preferred) OSHA 30-Hour General Industry
