Safety Specialist I

As a Safety Specialist I, you will support the employee safety program by providing a broad range of consulting and safety services. This includes: conducting training sessions for employees, investigating causes of accidents or injuries, and developing solutions for accident prevention through the interpretation of statistical data.

Essential Functions - the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
  • Evaluations of safety incidents
  • Work with managers and departments to improve and minimize future risk
  • Assist with the development of safety training materials
  • Present training materials in a variety of formats
  • Conduct onsite evaluations throughout the City and investigates accidents to determine root causes, and make recommendations regarding safety factors to help minimize or prevent future accidents
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
Knowledge of:
  • Federal, state and local government regulations, laws, policies and procedures
  • Modern office equipment, including computers and supporting software (especially Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
Ability to:
  • Compile, analyze and interpret statistical data
  • Build and maintain working relationships with managers and departments
  • Conduct onsite evaluations and investigate accidents to determine root cause and make recommendations
  • Obtain Associate Safety Professional certification

Successful candidates will have

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in occupational health/safety or a related field
  • One year of full-time experience as a safety professional
  • Possess, or obtain upon hire, a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.

Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

Ideal candidates will also have

  • Relevant safety certifications
  • An Associate Safety Professional certification
  • Safety experience in the public sector
  • Experience using Origami
  • Experience presenting and training employees on various safety topics

Additional Information

The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.
