Role Overview

UA is seeking a capable and curious School Support Data Manager to join our Operations & Data team. The Data Manager will be in charge of pulling together raw student and school-level data from various sources to inform a critical feedback loop for teammates working in NYC schools, so that they can consistently monitor their impact and improve their work, and to the advancement and executive teams, so the organization can share our work in the wider education world.

This is an opportunity to join an engaged, collaborative, mission-driven staff and to take part in the critical work of advancing the social and economic mobility of NYC students and students around the country. This position collaborates with and reports to the Director of Operations & Data, supports both school and office-based staff, and is based at Urban Assembly’s central office in Manhattan’s Financial District. This is a full-time, exempt, salaried position, averaging 35 hours per week, including paid sick and vacation days, paid holidays, and generous health benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience.

The UA provides schools and districts with innovative data-driven, student-centered approaches to career and technical education, academics, social-emotional learning, and postsecondary access and success. The (UA) founded a network of unique, small public secondary schools throughout NYC. UA schools are open to all students, and our goal is to prepare 100% of UA graduates for success in the 21st-century economy.

Job Description

The ideal candidate is excited to leverage UA’s existing tools and processes to connect various sources of information and proactively identify inconsistencies so that we are prepared to respond to inquiries that will improve our work. We’re looking for someone who has a passion for learning new tools and skills, and loves to document processes with an eye towards improvement every cycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate data for your peers

    • Work with colleagues and team to gather and organize reliable raw data from multiple sources, according to a calendar adapted each summer for each school year

    • Connect and clean up data sources to fill out a rich picture of trends across UA students and schools

    • Develop and maintain user-friendly program dashboards to assist colleagues in monitoring key metrics of each program and its impact

    • Curate information and counsel UA and school staff to promote strategic planning and data-informed decision-making

  • Weave data together for external use

    • Regularly provide data to varied stakeholders that answers questions about UA’s progress and impact across all partner schools and multiple years

  • Deepen the data-informed culture at UA with the Data team

    • Building on a strong foundation, strategize about how to build a data-informed culture and associated capacity within the UA team at-large

    • Uphold best practices for data privacy and security and share/monitor those practices with colleagues

Skill/Experience Requirements:

  • Four years work experience in a data-informed environment.

  • Demonstrated intermediate to advanced proficiency with spreadsheets.

  • Comfort with Google Workspace Apps (Sheets, Docs, Forms) and Microsoft Excel.

  • Ability to work in-person multiple days per week from UA’s office in Manhattan’s Financial District

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years experience (paid or unpaid) in an education-related or NYCDOE school setting

  • Comfort with Tableau Prep and Desktop

  • Basic coding familiarity (spreadsheet formulas)

  • Interest in basic visual design

  • Google training or credentials

Salary and Benefits

Salary range is commensurate with experience ($70,000 - $85,000/year), and includes an excellent benefits package; including employer-funded healthcare, transit benefits, financial support for professional development, and generous vacation time.
