PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION: The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is established to conserve and develop marine and estuarine resources; to conduct and sponsor scientific research; to promote and develop the Maine coastal fishing industries; to advise and cooperate with local, state, and federal officials concerning activities in coastal waters; and to implement, administer, and enforce the laws and regulations necessary for these purposes.

DMR provides leadership in marine policy, the management of marine resources, the development of sustainable marine resource-based business, and the protection of the marine environment. We do this work while providing the highest quality of public service where all people are treated as customers. ROLE OF THE POSITION: This position provides complex administrative and secretarial support to the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Director of State Marine Policy, and the Director of External Affairs. Responsibilities include oversight of the Commissioner’s schedule, receiving and appropriately directing communications through the Commissioner’s office, facilitating communications across Bureaus as necessary, and completing a variety of administrative tasks as assigned, including Freedom of Access requests, Lobster license entry, and organization of meetings across the state related to the business of the Commissioner’s office. This position serves as one of the first point of contacts for the for the general public, the fishing industry, the Legislature, and the Governor's Office.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Training, education, or experience in office and administrative support work that demonstrates 1) competency in applying a proficient knowledge of the principles and practices of office processes and administrative functions to perform advanced secretarial tasks in assisting management with statewide programs and policies, and 2) the ability to use independent judgment, initiative, and decision-making on complex administrative matters. All positions in this classification assume the qualifications of: Secretary and Secretary Associate.
