Seeking Cannery (Food Processing) Supervisor in Halifax Co! State Career! Job at North Carolina Adult Correction
This position is currently located within the Department of Public Safety but will transfer to the Department of Adult Correction when it is established on January 1st, 2023.
This Correction Enterprise Supervisor II position is located at the cannery of the Roanoke River Correctional Institution in Tillery, North Carolina (Halifax County). This position supervises offender laborers at the cannery engaged in producing canned food items for distribution to tax-supported agencies. This includes the processing of raw vegetables, fruits, drink and juice bases and pancake syrups into canned commodities.
This position will train and supervise unskilled inmate labor to satisfy production requirements, as well as to ensure safe equipment operation. This employee must be able to utilize food production equipment and materials efficiently to minimize costs. Food products must be processed in a timely manner and according to safety regulations in order that finished products satisfy quality standards and specifications (USDA and NCDA).
Please Note: This classification is currently pending modifications, requiring State HR Commission approval, in order to designate it as a Certified position. It is anticipated that these changes will be completed in December 2022, therefore, applicants must meet all requirements for an NC Probationary Certification, in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission within one year of employment. Upon successful completion of training, up to $5000 will be added to the annual base salary, effective the 1st day of the month following successful (training) completion. All DPS employees may be subject to reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.
About the Department of Adult Correction (DAC)
The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons, Correction Enterprises, Division of Community Corrections, and Reentry Programs and Services.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:
- Experience working in food production or food processing environment.
Management Preferences (preferred but not required)
- Knowledge of food production regulations.
- Supervisory experience in a food processing environment.
- Correctional experience.

- Must be at least 20 years of age and a citizen of the United States.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Pass Psychological testing as required by NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
- Pass Physical Examination as required by NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
- Pass Drug Screening as required by NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
- Attend and successfully complete (6) weeks of Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT) at a Training Facility. Employees shall be scheduled for BCOT during their 2nd week of employment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and a minimum of two years
of related industry/service experience;
or
an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.
