Senior Assistant Attorney General/University Counsel, University of Mary Washington Job at Virginia Attorney General

The attorney will provide representation and a wide variety of legal services to the University of Mary Washington. Located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, UMW has approximately 4,300 undergraduate and graduate students, roughly half of whom live on the Fredericksburg campus. UMW has two nearby campuses: Stafford, offering graduate and adult degree programs; and Dahlgren, offering continuing education and professional development courses.
It is anticipated that the attorney will handle a broad range of legal matters, serving all divisions of the University. Serving as agency counsel requires advising decision-makers throughout the organization on the legal risks and obligations associated with their duties as employees or board members. University Counsel may also represent UMW in state or federal court, before regulatory bodies and to third parties in pre-litigation and transactional matters. Additionally, this individual will provide other legal services to the Commonwealth as directed the Office of the Attorney General.

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will have excellent analytical abilities and written and oral communication skills and be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion. Excellent interpersonal skills are also required. High level organizational skills and an ability to manage many projects simultaneously and work under pressure are required. A minimum of ten years of experience in the general practice of law is required. Preference will be given to applicants with specific experience in the representation higher education institutions. This position will be based at the University. Admission to the Virginia Bar is required before beginning employment.
