The Arts Program Specialist series includes positions involved in a statewide program for the preservation and furtherance of Culture and Arts in Hawaii. Positions in this series are involved in short- and long-range planning, preparation of grant proposals and budget estimates; surveys, formulation of specific projects or activities, development of appropriate relationships and preparation of contracts, etc. Positions in this series require broad knowledge of the visual and performing arts, and the ability to deal with individuals and groups on matters of culture and the arts as well as on matters dealing with contract arrangements, expenditures and other business details.
The Arts Program Specialist (APS) II performs a variety of work in maintaining liaison and coordination relative to ethno-cultural and arts activities. This class is distinguished by its responsibility for assisting higher-level specialists by carrying out detailed work in the maintenance of liaison and coordination with community organizations and participating agencies in the conduct of activities; and performing other related duties as assigned.
The current level II vacancy is located in the Arts in Public Places (APP) Program, SFCA and serve as an exhibit specialist for the program. Duties and responsibilities involve assisting a higher-level specialist with the design of exhibitions of works of art, including handling, transporting and installing of works of art in conformance with established procedures and guidelines; designing plans for the installation of works or art; installing and dismantling special exhibitions; performing fabrication and accurate assembly of scaled models for exhibition design; performing fabrication and production of exhibition supports; documenting and maintaining a large and diverse collection (e.g., verify identification, measurements and location of works of art for maintenance and inventory control); conducting periodic inspections and monitoring physical condition of works of art; and providing technical assistance and resource consultancy on public art handling, transportation, and installation technique to artists and art organizations throughout the State, and performing other related duties as assigned.
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
Basic Education/Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Specialized Experience (Arts in Public Places) Requirement: In order to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position, applicants must possess knowledge of exhibit design, fabrication and installation techniques; art history; the processes, materials and techniques used in visual arts; storage and handling requirements of works of art; visual design; basic repair and maintenance needs of individual works of art; and the ability to handle and protect works of art from damage while in storage and transit; and distinguish basic colors and shades of colors to ensure that artwork selected for exhibits and displays are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Therefore, certification of eligibles shall be restricted to those applicants whose work experience includes SIX (6) months of experience in an arts in public places program or other arts program related to public art or visual art, which provided the applicant with the knowledge and abilities described above.
Special Requirements:
A. Applicants must be able to lift and carry works of art such as paintings and sculptures weighing up to 75 pounds on a regular basis assisted by another person and/or use of equipment (e.g., hoisting equipment, hand truck), with or without reasonable accommodation.
B. Applicants must be able to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors to ensure artwork selected for art exhibits and displays are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Driver's License: Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
Substitutions Allowed: A bachelor's degree in visual arts education, art history, visual arts or visual design from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the six (6) months of the Specialized Experience (Arts in Public Places) described above.
