The server is responsible for coordinating table service for residents and communicating with front and back of house personnel. The Server will also be responsible for insuring that all residents receive gracious hospitality and prompt service as prescribed by The Blake’s standards. Scope & Status: Non-Exempt/Hourly The Food and Beverage Server reports directly to the Dining Room Coordinator and secondarily to the Director of Dining Relationships: Interacts with: a. All staff, including cooks, personal assistants, nurses, administrative staff. b. Residents, family members, support groups and referral sources Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform and complete each essential duty satisfactorily, have the ability to multi-task, have excellent communication and language skills and interact effectively with residents and community personnel. An individual must also exercise good judgement, must be able to work independently as well as part of a team, and must maintain a professional appearance and conduct at all times according to Blake Management policies and procedures. An on-going training program is required. The following certifications, training and diplomas are required: high school diploma and/or GED. ServSafe Certification is preferred. Areas of Responsibility: 1. General a. Practices excellent time management skills and completes tasks within company time frames. Demonstrates the commitment to working with efficiency and with a sense of urgency. b. Demonstrates ability to successfully focus and serve multiple tables in an organized manner, multi task, ensure timeliness and ask for assistance when needed. c. Demonstrates anticipation of needs and requests of residents. d. Demonstrates knowledge of menu items offered and can clearly describe each dish served. Demonstrates exemplary execution of side work procedures. Gets approval before leaving/going on break. g. Time management: Demonstrates a sense of urgency and accomplishes a reasonable amount of work within established timeframes. Ensures that preparations for service are on schedule, pre-pouring and pre-setting as directed. h. Demonstrates appropriate etiquette in all areas of service: Smiles and promotes friendly and positive interaction with residents, guests and co workers Communicates effectively and clearly to ensure accuracy Verbal interactions are professional and courteous Follows fine dining steps of service order i. Demonstrates proper food safety at all times in the following areas: Promptly cleans spills and messes in the dining room Labels and dates all food Demonstrates proper cooling of hot foods Practices proper hand washing Wears gloves when handling food Stores food properly in coolers Understands HACCP basics Effectively uses dish machine and three sink areas Utilizes first in/first out inventory rotation Adheres to workplace hazardous materials system j. Modified Diets: Understands low sodium, no sugar, mechanical soft, puree and chopped diets. k. Demonstrates ability to translate complicated orders into appropriate dining communication format. l Sets and resets tables in line with BMG standards. Ensures that the dining room set-up is consistently ready for designated and scheduled serving times and has a positive impact on food service. m Equipment: Demonstrates a mastery of equipment function, proper handling and maintenance. n Makes appropriate food and drink suggestions to residents. o Demonstrates proper ticket writing and/or POS usage. p Ensures that hospitality station is well maintained and stocked. q. Identifies china, glassware, flatware, tabletop and small wares by correct name. r. Resolves resident and guest complaints effectively, involves management in the event of a complaint. Promotes high levels of resident satisfaction. s. Special Events: demonstrates understanding of setting up banquets and offsite events. t. Can carry a tray to serve food. Teamwork: demonstrates positive attitude and interpersonal skills with co-workers. Communication: demonstrates effective communication with co-workers and residents. w. Participates in mandatory staff meetings. x. Cleans dishes, utensils and equipment according to The Blake procedures. Stores all supplies and equipment to maintain cleanliness. Uses all equipment as directed. y. Performs additional tasks and duties as requested by Dining Room Coordinator and Director of Dining to support the overall goals of the community and company. 2. Regulation and Policy Compliance a. Adheres to Blake Management policies and procedures as it relates to dining services. b. Adheres to Federal, State, County and City regulations andlaws. c. Maintains a working knowledge and demonstrates acceptable performance skills in: 1. Resident rights and responsibilities. 2. Respect for residents’ belongings. 3. Respect for residents’ privacy. 4. Respect for residents’ religious beliefs. 5. Respect for interpersonal relationships with family and other staff members. PHYSICAL, SENSORY, AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Primary Physical Requirements: 1. Lift up to 10 lbs: Frequently required to lift boxes and supplies and during food preparation, storage, cleaning and stocking. 2. Lift 11 to 25 lbs: Occasionally may be required when dealing with boxes, equipment and supplies. 3. Lift 26 to 50lbs: May be required during the delivery of products and supplies and for the storage of inventory. Employee is to request assistance from other staff members. 4. Lift over 50 lbs: May be required during the delivery of products and supplies and for the storage of inventory. Employee is to request assistance from other staff members. 5. Reach above shoulder height: Occasionally occurs when reaching for cooking items and supplies and when storing items in the cooler, freezer or pantry area. 6. Reach at shoulder height: Occasionally occurs when reaching for cooking items, supplies and when storing items in the cooler, freezer or pantry area. 7. Reach below shoulder height: Frequently occurs during meal preparation, cleaning, storing/stocking items and meal service. 8. Push/Pull: Occasionally required when assisting a resident in a wheelchair: which rolls easily across tile, vinyl or carpeted floor. Other Physical Consideration: 1. Twisting: Frequently may occur while cooking and cleaning. 2. Bending: Occasionally may occur while cooking, cleaning, storing and stocking. 3. Squatting: Occasionally may occur while communicating with a resident in a wheelchair and during cleaning and inventory duties. 4. Kneeling: Occasionally may occur while assisting with resident care. 5. Stair Climbing: Occasional. Elevators are available. 6. Sit-to-Stand: Frequent. 7. Sitting: Required for documentation, ordering, menu planning, inventory, invoice processing and occasionally when communicating with residents or during training meetings. Work Surface: Varies from concrete, carpeting, vinyl and tile surfaces. When seated, typically an office-type chair. COGNITIVE AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: 1. Talking: Necessary for communicating with residents, family members, staff, regulatory agencies and referral sources. Must be able to speak English fluently. 2. Hearing: Necessary for taking instruction from consultants and requests from residents. Must be able to understand English fluently. 3. Sight: Necessary for doing job correctly and effectively. Must be able to write and read English fluently. 4. Smelling: Smelling is required for detecting odors related to cooking, food safety, food preparation and/or general cleanliness. 5. Reading and writing: Necessary for written communication and following written instructions Summary of Occupational Exposure: Tasks performed by the employee may involve the following risks. Category I -- Job classification in which employee has occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens. (Infrequent) Category II -- Activity performed without blood exposure but exposure may occur in an emergency.
