Job Summary
The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Utah is searching for an organized and detail-oriented Shipping and Receiving Clerk to assist with daily operations.
The Shipping and Receiving Clerk is responsible for general and routine daily distribution of packages, equipment and supplies to various labs in two buildings. Assist with outgoing shipments. Inspects issues with equipment, materials and warehouses. Also, ensures that commonly used supplies are stocked in the storeroom.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
1. Receives deliveries by comparing shipment with records and verifying stock meets specifications. Stores materials; resolves order problems with vendors.
2. Keeps track of orders to ensure merchandise is delivered to appropriate locations. Enters order information into the computer system.
3. Orders materials, equipment, or supplies based on inventory needs, or a special request by processing requisitions through central stores, purchasing or directly from the vendor.
4. Distributes equipment and supplies to students, faculty and campus departments.
5. May assist department personnel in the selection of supplies and equipment. Ensures quality of materials is consistent with department needs.
6. Maintains and conducts inventory of supply items and equipment; ensures inventory levels are updated and maintained to cover departmental requests; keeps storeroom organized and needed materials accessible to staff members.
7. Handles the receipt, inspection and delivery of radioactive and flammable materials according to federal standards and University policies and procedures.
8. May compile orders for Purchasing and verify the receipt of orders with Accounts Payable.
Problem Solving
The incumbent may have the authority to determine the type and price of items to stock and may select vendors. He/she may make decisions regarding special orders, item substitutions, suggest ways to resolve shipping problems, inventory control, and whether to back-order supplies/materials.
Examples of problems facing the incumbent include involvement with tracking payment or billing problems with vendors and the University system; determining which supply items to keep in stock; and locating substitutes for items out of stock. The incumbent may also be required to deal with supply problems that arise; make certain all items are entered into the computer system and accounted for; and resolve concerns of dissatisfied customers.

Often: Hazards ( includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to laboratory equipment, moving vehicles, or exposure to chemicals ).
Seldom: Extreme cold, extreme heat, noise ( there is sufficient noise to cause you to shout in order to be heard above the noise level).

Minimum Qualifications
Four years shipping and receiving/stockroom experience, or equivalency, with preferably at least two years supervisory experience; the ability to routinely move or manipulate heavy objects; a knowledge of standard warehousing procedures; demonstrated human relations skills; and a commitment to provide excellent customer service required. A valid Utah Driver’s license with proof of insurability may be required for positions that require delivery responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications
One year shipping and receiving or stockroom experience, or equivalency; the ability to move or manipulate heavy objects; demonstrated human relation skills in dealing with customers; and a commitment to provide excellent customer service required.
Computer and/or data entry skills may be preferred.
A valid Utah Driver’s license with proof of insurability may be required for persons in positions that require delivery.
