Job purpose

  • Provide leadership and assist in the effort to manage and maintain the efficiency, professionalism, and profitability of the service department.
  • Provide direct supervision of the service technicians.
  • Ensure that the customer’s needs are met.
  • Maintain high standards for quality repairs in the service department.
  • Interacts with the Assistant Service Manager, Service Consultants, warranty administrators, parts personnel, and technicians.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of product warranty coverage and be capable of informing customers of applicable coverage.
  • Provide service topics to Assistant Service Manager to hold monthly toolbox meetings.
  • Assist with shop compliance and safety.
  • Review customer’s work requests and consult with customer on additional work needed and/or additional work recommended.
  • Secure customer’s authorization for any additional work required. Document the customer contact on the repair order.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of product changes, bulletins and other pertinent information and share information during monthly tool box meetings.
  • Disseminate information to all technicians concerning product changes, product updates, observed failure patterns, departmental repair issues, safety issues and any other information that will make a technician more productive and better able to perform his/her job duties in an efficient and professional manner.
  • Help technicians diagnose failures and suggest possible repair procedures. Direct and provide instruction on technician’s repair procedures when needed.
  • Provide direction and instruction to inexperienced technicians as needed.
  • Supervise technician’s work for accuracy and efficiency.
  • Monitor repair progress on all jobs to ensure completion within the prescribed time allotment.
  • Inspect or road test trucks to insure complete and correct repair of each customer concern. Sign off on each repair order operation as inspection is completed.
  • Review cause and correction information on repair order operations as the technicians complete each individual job.
  • Determine specialty tool requirements and repair needs and facilitate the purchase and/or repair.
  • Inform Service Manager of potential problem areas and/or customer concerns.
  • Provide direction to technicians on facility housekeeping.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
