PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Perform casework service to help students resolve personal, emotional, and social problems that interfere with their adjustment to school and their ability to enjoy the benefits of the educational process. Function as part of the pupil services team to formulate plans with the school, student, and parents.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree in social work from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program

Must hold a valid Social Worker license in Texas

Bilingual Spanish- preferred


Special Knowledge/Skills:

Broad-based knowledge of community service providers and awareness of barriers to access of these services

Demonstrate mature judgment

Possess confidence, self-assurance, poise and presence to instill trust and morale in co-workers and management

Knowledge of individual and group interpersonal skills

Knowledge and skill in casework methods

Strong consultation skills for conferencing with teachers, parents, and students

Knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies, including behavior management interventions

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Ability to present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents, and district staff

Proficient skills In Microsoft Excel and Word

Ability to interpret laws, policies and procedures


Work Conditions:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions including keyboarding; reaching

Lifting: Lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds)

Environment: Must be able to work with frequent interruptions and maintain professional demeanor under stress; must be able to work flexible hours

Travel: Frequent district-wide travel, and moderate out of district travel

Regular attendance is an essential function.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Perform casework service with parents as an integral part of the task of helping students, to increase the parent's understanding, their constructive participation in resolving their child's problems, and their knowledge and use of appropriate resources available.
  • Consult and collaborate with other school personnel in gathering and giving information on a case, and in establishing and planning for respective roles in the modification of the student's behavior.
  • Collaborate with counselor on the referral of students, and serves as liaison with appropriate outside agencies such as 211, Medicaid, Social Services, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
  • Coordinate and integrate school and community resources and refer school staff and parents to community resources where appropriate.
  • Make home visits for the purpose of gathering helpful information relating to students.
  • Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.
  • Serve as liaison between home and school when considerable follow-up is necessary, as in welfare cases, foster home children, and disadvantaged students.
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of parent involvement activities. Develop and conduct parenting training and support groups.
  • Keep sufficient records of cases for use by school staff members and outside agencies when appropriate.
  • Assist school counselors, nurse, or diagnostician in accessing available and appropriate resources for students and families.
  • Provide ongoing information to school concerning community resources available for students and families.
  • Serve as a liaison between families, the school and community resources.
  • Assist school counselors, students and staff in emergency situations.
  • Work with community agencies to identify resources for student and family support.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other required documents.
  • Ensure confidentiality.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all local policies and state and federal statutes including the Educator Code of Ethics.
  • Perform such other tasks and accepts such other responsibilities as may be assigned.
