Position: Special Education Classroom Assistant

The Special Education Classroom Assistant will assist the instructional teacher with preparing rigorous academic instruction for our scholars and providing social and emotional support in the classroom.

Key Duties/Responsibilities*

• Assist in the educational and social development of our scholars under the direction and guidance of the Director of Special Education.
• Assist with the implementation of IEPs and monitor the scholars progress.
• Provide instructional and non-instructional support inside and outside the classroom. This could includes:

• Ensuring the scholar is in the right place
• Providing prompts and redirections to help scholar stay on task and complete work assignments
• Support scholar in peer to peer conversations and play
• Reiterate directions and expectations
• Accompany scholar on bathroom/water/sensory breaks
• Assist with providing support with administering medication and with other medical related needs including toileting, and feeding
• Support scholars during times of escalation- help scholars calm down, reflect on behaviors, use coping tools or strategies.

• Collaborate with general education and the special education teachers in writing the scholar’s annual IEP or 504 plans. Use data to drive decisions about adding or reducing support.
• Execute all portions of a scholar’s Behavior Intervention Plan.
• Assist classroom teachers with collecting, analyzing, and maintaining behavioral and academic data.
• Develop and maintain frequent rapport with the scholar(s) family.

Ideal Skills/Traits*

• Able to work collaboratively with colleagues including general education teachers, related service providers, the IEP team, the Leadership Team, and other Special Education teachers
• Committed to building relationships with families in pursuit of providing the best education for Diverse Learners
• Experience with writing IEPs and participating in IEP meetings
• Experience developing and modifying long-term plans, units and assessments using cross-curricular data
• Demonstrates success in raising the achievement levels of traditionally under-served scholars

Education/Experience*

• Hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in education
• Hold a current Illinois ELS endorsement as a paraprofessional educator preferred
• Minimum of 1-2 years teaching preferred
• CPI training preferred
