Classroom Paraprofessional Job Description
Maple Heights City Schools is seeking a highly qualified Classroom Paraprofessional dedicated to providing a superior educational support to students. The ideal candidate will join a diverse staff of passionate education professionals, eager to create an inspiring and nurturing learning environment that prioritizes student engagement and achievement.
The Classroom Paraprofessional is expected to assist, support, and work closely with teachers, administrators, and other team members in providing a quality instructional program to continuously improve student achievement. Classroom Paraprofessional position types:
- 1:1-Assigned to a specific student with intense needs, either medical or behavioral
- Self-Contained Resource Room-Works in a cross-categorical classroom where students remain for a large portion of the day due the needs outlined in there Individualize Education Plan (IEP). Instruction is delivered by an Intervention Specialist (IS).
- Inclusion-Supports students with disabilities in the general education classroom. Instruction is provided by a general education teacher, with support from an intervention specialist.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced and outlined by the teacher.
- Provides extra assistance to students with exceptionalities, such as non-English-speaking students or those with physical, developmental and/or learning disabilities, and 504 Plans.
- Assists as directed by the supervising teacher in the effort to successfully maintain students with special needs in an integrated setting, as determined by the IEP team.
- Assists the teacher in preparing materials and equipment for direct instructional activity.
- Assists identified students with transporting materials or supplies as needed.
- Assists identified students with specific personal and physical needs.
- Supervises students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums, or on field trips.
- Communicates clearly and positively with students and all stakeholders.
- Performs assigned non-instructional classroom duties, such as snack time, toileting, class change and clothing routines.
- Serves as a source of information and assists any substitute teacher assigned to the class.
- Attends staff meetings and serves on committees as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher, Principal or his/her designee.
- Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and community.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly productive environment.
- Collaborates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school.
- Demonstrates a positive attitude toward work assignment.
- Attend work regularly.
- Adjusts to work assignments and/or schedule changes.
- Effectively observes assigned work hours.
- Maintains a pattern of prompt and regular attendance.
- Follows the daily schedule as prescribed.
SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL SUPPORT:
- Promote good social relationships among students and with students.
- Assist in maintaining a classroom environment conducive to learning
- Ensure safety of students.
- Monitor and supervise students at arrival and dismissal of school.
- Maintains open and ongoing communication with parents on their child's progress only in collaboration with teacher or building administrator.
OTHER SKILLS AND EXPECTATIONS:
- Promote positive public relation by interacting tactfully and diplomatically with staff, students, parents, and public.
- Enforce and comply with all Maple Heights Board of Education policies and procedures.
- Be fully engaged in instructional and social emotional support of students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of college level coursework or passing of The ParaPro Assessment in order to obtain Highly Qualified Paraprofessional Certificate.
- Prior experience working with special needs children desirable.
- Participation in CPI Training and any additional training as required by the district.
- Successful completion of federal and state criminal background checks.
- Ability to use discretion in managing confidential information.
- High quality written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in an urban school.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
