Position: Classroom Educational Paraprofessional
Reports to: Classroom Teacher - Building Principal - Coordinator of Student Services - Superintendent
Assignment: 181 days
5.5 hours/day
Job Summary: Challenging environment which requires many quick and accurate decisions. Able to cross-train for other classroom educational paraprofessional positions. Able to assist in behavior management techniques, methods and procedures. Able to attend workshops dealing with characteristics and techniques of students with disabilities. Able to assist with medical and personal needs of students as they arise.
Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.
POSITION FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide and/or assist with the supervision of students in the classroom environment and during unorganized break periods.
- Work with the teacher as a team member in the educational and social development of students.
- Act as a positive social and emotional model for students.
- Assist/adapt in the use of specialized instructional materials.
- Help in recognizing and evaluating the quality of work performed by students.
- Monitor several groups of students at the same time.
- Employ effective and appropriate strategies in working with varying exceptionalities under teacher supervision.
- Maintain confidentiality by refraining from discussion of student progress and problems with others.
- Use product/judgment in situations involving student behavior.
- Assist in developing procedures and techniques in providing appropriate programs for students.
- Assist in providing positive motivational skills in students.
- Perform clerical tasks as assigned by the classroom teacher.
- Assist in the general clean-up of facilities, materials, and equipment.
- Prepare instructional materials assigned by the appropriate personnel.
- Assist students to and from school busses and vehicles, which may include lifting.
- Assist in meeting the student's personal care needs as directed and as appropriate.
- Assist students in traveling from different areas in the school building.
- Abide by building guidelines.
- Assume full responsibility for fostering a good educational paraprofessional to classroom teacher working relationship and in no case, to supersede the teacher's authority to manage all aspects of the instructional program.
- Monitor students during recess, lunch, arrival and dismissal times as directed.
- Maintain student/classroom confidentiality.
- Maintain a positive working relationship with other educational personnel.
- Continue to demonstrate effort to learn more about the job and skills necessary to perform the job.
- Provide input of program through surveys and discussion.
- Never undertake any instructional or non-instructional activities for students assigned to him/her for assistance without being so directed by, or without the supervision of, the classroom teacher to whom the educational paraprofessional is assigned.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Become certificated in Safe Physical Restraint Training.

During a typical work day:
Must be able to stand 3 total hours

Must be able to walk 4 total hours
Must be able to bend/stop, squat, and reach above shoulder
Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs. frequently
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. occasionally
Must be able to do repetitive actions including grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manipulation, twisting/turning, writing, or printing
Must be able to adhere to daily time schedule
Must be able to hear (40 decibel loss maximum)
Must be able to verbally communicate
Must have vision requirements or near acuity of 20 inches or less and far acuity of 20 feet or more with depth perception, accommodation, and field of vision
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
Position encompasses entire building and grounds. Center of operation is the building which is ventilated and well lighted.

Must possess computer/software skills
Must possess math skills
Must possess general office skills
Must possess oral and written communication skills
Must have ability to operate various office equipment
