Stable Isotope Lab Manager Job at Marine Biological Laboratory

Marine Biological Laboratory Woods Hole, MA 02543

The Ecosystems Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory is hiring a manager for its Stable Isotope Laboratory. The lab utilizes both Dual- Inlet and Continuous-Flow Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer systems for the measurement of δ15N, δ13C, δ18O, and δ34S on various types of samples. Both natural abundance and isotopically enriched samples can be accommodated. The lab has been in continuous operation since 1985 and helped pioneer the use of stable isotopes in ecosystems ecology. The lab runs samples both for internal and external users. The instruments include two GV Instruments Isoprime mass spectrometers that can be variously interfaced with four different automated sample preparation units, and our workhorse Europa 20-20 mass spectrometer interfaced with an automated combustion/purification unit. Given the age of these instruments we are planning to upgrade and/or replace some of the equipment within the next year. The successful candidate would assist in the submission of proposals to upgrade the equipment and oversee its installation.

The manager is responsible for instrument operation and routine maintenance, the flow and tracking of samples through the lab, as well as sending users the results and submitting billing information to Financial Services. Depending upon the interest and qualifications of the successful applicant other duties could include supervising more general operations of the shared chemical facility at the Ecosystems Center. Some of the previous managers have also worked with faculty on new methods development and participated in courses where stable isotopes are being used.

Start Date: It is hoped the successful candidate could start by February 1, 2023. If the candidate can’t start that soon we would still seek input from them on the proposal for new equipment.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

A M.S. or Ph.D. and experience with isotope ratio mass spectrometers. A demonstrated interest in working as part of a team.
