POSITION SUMMARY:
The Staff Environmental Specialist will work under the supervision of the Sr. Environmental Engineer to support environmental compliance within the business unit – both during the pre-construction phase and the operations phase of projects. This position is responsible for assisting the Sr. Environmental Engineer and Environmental Compliance Specialist in the development and deployment of policies and programs to various projects nationwide.
This position is primarily focused on the preparation of the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan and the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) for projects. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, supporting SPCC and SWPPP implementation; Threatened and Endangered species implementation, Air Permitting implementation, recycling and waste disposal and sustainability innovation at project sites, and pre-construction support for proposal efforts.
They must have the ability to listen and build relationships with various employees including estimating, procurement, and project operations teams as well as client representatives. This position requires the capability of travel to project sites on a monthly basis, as needed.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Staff Environmental Specialist will support environmental related aspects of multiple projects, as required by federal, state, and local regulations during both the pre-construction and construction phase of solar projects. The primary focus of the position is SPCC and SWPPP preparation and compliance including the ability to evaluate and propose BMPs as needed based on site visits and review of provided engineering drawings. Typical responsibilities include:
- Preparation of SPCC Plans for upcoming projects under the guidance of the Sr. Environmental Engineer.
- Preparation of SWPPP narratives for upcoming projects under the guidance of the Environmental Compliance Specialist and Sr. Environmental Engineer.
- Review and redline of Erosion and Sediment Control Plans provided by the Engineer of Record, including site visits to identify potential areas of concern prior to mobilization of the construction team.
- Site visits to projects to ensure that the site SWPPP BMPs are being implemented as anticipated.
- Build and maintain a BMP cost/use matrix with the guidance of the Sr. Environmental Engineer, Environmental Compliance Specialist, and Procurement group for use during proposals and operations.
- Review due diligence documentation provided during the RFP and provide stormwater BMP take offs with the guidance of the Sr. Environmental Engineer.
- Additional tasks and trainings as assigned by the Environmental Compliance Specialist or the Sr. Environmental Engineer.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science/Engineering or related degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Minimum 3 years progressive environmental experience.
- Prior stormwater experience and stormwater training such as CISEC, CQIS, QPSWPPP, or CSI-Construction or the ability to obtain.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable motor vehicle driving record (MVR).
- HAZWOPER 40-hour or ability to obtain
- Travel up to 25% of the time is required.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Interpersonal skills – Ability to present information to a small group of employees or sub-contractors.
- Effective communication skills (oral, written, listening, presentation) to effectively work with employees and subcontractors.
- Computer literacy. This does not include knowledge of all software to be used, but the ability to learn to use efficiently the software which is in use. Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Visio).
- Organization skills. Scheduling, planning and prioritization.
- Intermediate construction drawing knowledge. Knowledge of drawing layouts, references, notes, and good practices associated with producing and reading construction drawings.
- Ability to follow safety rules without cutting corners. To understand the intent of safety rules, not blindly adhering to the literal words of the rule.
