General Statement of Duties
UBMS at MWCC is looking for a College Readiness Advisor to work with youth in middle and high school in the exploration of STEM fields and coach them through the college process. The primary goal of the Upward Bound Math and Science program (UBMS) is to prepare high school students for postsecondary education programs that lead to careers in the fields of math and science. The UBMS program serves 63 high school students in three target areas in Massachusetts: Gardner (Gardner High School), Athol (Athol High School) and Winchendon (Murdock Middle/High School).
This position will work with students across the academic year and through a summer program. Students meet two Thursday evenings per month for STEM enrichment activities and field trips.
The summer component of the UBMS program is a six week residential academic program designed to simulate a college going experience. The summer component will be held at Fitchburg State University. The summer component includes academic classes and career exploration for participants entering 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade.
Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Director, support recruitment of eligible students into the UBMS program;
  • Chaperone college visits and field trips;
  • Plan and implement recreational and enrichment activities for summer program participants;
  • Support social media engagement of students, families and the greater community;
  • Advise students interested in STEM with regard to high school course selection as it aligns with their personal goals and interests;
  • Facilitate after-school homework help sessions;
  • Guide high school juniors and seniors through the financial aid application process and the college enrollment process;
  • Provide regular documentation and reporting of activities;
  • Support collaborative and reciprocal relationships with school administration, guidance, teachers and other community partners;
  • Engage in professional development opportunities, both in person and virtually.

Specifically designed for disadvantaged students, UBMS is one of the nationwide TRIO programs created through federal legislation nearly 40 years ago. TRIO participants represent a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. UBMS is 100% funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The current grant cycle is for 9/1/2022 ? 8/31/2027 and funding for this grant is $312,480.00 annually.

Minimum Qualifications: *

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, Education, or closely related field;
  • Six (6) months experience and/or training involving student activity planning/coordination, student organization advisement, leadership development, and interpersonal relations; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
