The California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking to hire a student assistant. Under the direction of the Marketing Manager, Associate Editor of Publications, or Graphics Design supervisor, the student assistant assists the senior-level graphic designers in creating and editing park and campground maps for California State Parks brochures and websites and for other park needs.

Job location is in McClellan, California. Possible hybrid/remote options may be available after training.


Conditions of Employment

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.

UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant positing should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week’s notice.

Due to COVID-19, the student will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI telework agreement.


Prerequisites

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable) at an accredited college or university.

Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.


Majors/Fields of Study

Communication Studies, Digital Media, Environmental Studies. Geography, Landscape Architecture, Marketing, Real Estate Land Use Affairs, Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration, Urban Land Development, or Graphic Design.


Work Schedule

F lexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.


Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).


Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with ArcGIS or other geographic information system (GIS).
  • Completion of GIS-related coursework; e.g., "Intro to Cartography" and "Intro to GIS."
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator will be helpful/preferred. Training will be provided.
  • Attention to detail and highly organized; focused; meticulous; good communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

The student assistant assists the senior-level graphic designers in creating and editing park and campground maps for California state park units. Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Under the direction of the senior-level graphic designers, the student assistant with map development, using ArcGIS, ESRI ArcMap, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign software to produce maps for interpretive brochures, panels, websites, etc. Prepares files for reviews, printing, photocopying, posting online, etc. Ensures all projects comply with department interpretive and accessibility standards.
  • The student assistant engages in project coordination, collaborating with various remote and on-site staff to plan and produce maps for educational, interpretive, and marketing projects. Works with the Associate Editor of Publications, Marketing Manager (or lead), or Graphic Design supervisor in the scheduling, production, and quality control of assigned projects. Occasional travel off-site, overnight, outdoors may be necessary via state vehicle.
  • Assists with various administrative duties, including maintaining, backing up, and archiving of all project communications, digital resources, hard copies, and related intellectual property documentation.

Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.


Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office environment. Hybrid-teleworking option may be available after fully trained.
