Department Overview:
The Department of Emergency Medicine at OHSU is home to over 150 faculty, adjunct faculty, and clinical associates under the direction of Mary Tanski, M.D., M.B.A., associate professor and Department Chair. Our provider¿s staff at OHSU's Level 1 Trauma Center and Doernbecher Pediatric ED as well as our three community Emergency Departments (Hillsboro Medical Center, Adventist Health Portland, and Columbia Memorial Hospital), three ED Observation Units, the Immediate Care Virtual Visits Program, and the Oregon Poison Center. The Department of Emergency Medicine at OHSU has always been highly ranked in NIH Funded Research and is home to the Center for Policy and Research in Emergency Medicine (CPR-EM). Our residency program currently trains 33 residents and offers a diverse training environment through partnerships at several area hospitals. OHSU offers EM specialty training in the form of select fellowships in: Research, Education, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Administration, EMS, Toxicology, and Ultrasound . Function/Duties of Position:
This person will work closely with the study PIs, Research Manager and Study Coordinators on multiple research studies. They will be responsible for study start up and management, screening, patient enrollment, data abstraction and entry, data quality and study closure. They will be working on both observational/registry data collection and randomized controlled trials and participate in the development and documentation of data collection operational and procedural plans. This person will work primarily with electronic records and databases to determine work needs, and will support the overall needs of the Study Teams through study start up to study closure, and other duties as assigned, including patient and partner (hospital and agency) level communication for consenting, follow-up, and other study and/or data-related tasks. They should have familiarity with study coordination/management, medical records, and research-related data abstraction experience. This person should be self-motivated, able to work with little guidance but within documented protocols, and familiar with patient and data privacy and confidentiality policies. Due to the nature of emergency medicine, some trials may require on call, and after normal business hours response from time to time, for subject consenting and enrollment activities.

Responsibilities include:
  • Coordinate studies
    • This involves startup work, study management, throughout the study; manage data flow; coordination of documentation and data storage; coordinate prehospital and hospital data flow; reviewing timeliness and prioritization needs with team to facilitate meeting study-related benchmarks and communicating directly to the Data Coordinating Center.
  • Review medical records, abstracting relevant variables into electronic system.
    • Complete enrollment forms for both registry and trial patients.
    • Also includes: Pre-Hospital and Hospital data abstraction as needed, entry and tracking using the local and web-based study databases.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree (4 yr) with major courses in field of research/No experience.
  • Data collection including use and development of local and web-based databases, study-related data tracking, and data confidentiality rules.
  • Proficient in MS, Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Knowledge and experience working in Epic.
  • Ability to work with very detailed information and independent decision-making and problem-solving skills required.
  • Ability to respond, as needed/assigned, after hours for study call shifts on nights and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum 1-year experience working with research studies.
  • Experience with data abstraction for research purposes strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a clinical research team & environment.
  • Experience with consenting patients for research.
  • Spanish language fluency.
  • Familiarity with EPIC medical record system.
  • Competency with RedCap.
  • Prior training in Human Subject Research, and Good Clinical Practice.
