Summer Camp Program Manager Job at Camp Fire Heartland
Camp Fire Heartland offers an outdoor day camp experience in the wooded areas of Kansas City, near Swope Park and the Kansas City Zoo. We have an exciting opportunity for a Program Manager to join our 2023 summer team. The Program Manager serves as a key member of the leadership team and will be responsible for the overall management, programmatic, implementation, and oversite of all camp programs alongside the Camp Director.
Desirable applicants will have proven success or demonstrate emerging skills in the areas of programming & staff management, hospitality, and communication. The ideal candidate will be a creative problem solver with a passion for programming and an energetic presence. They will bring an enthusiastic and dynamic approach to ensure our staff and participants engage in a life changing camp experience that will have a positive impact in their life.
Hours can range anywhere from 7am-6pm Monday-Friday. However, most days will be an 8:30am-5:30pm workday. You will not always have to work the entire day, but it’s camp and somedays you might have to!
Dates of position are May 22nd to July 31st, M-F. Camp has 7 sessions and runs from Jun 5th- July 28th. We will not run camp 4thof July week.
Leadership training will be May 22nd-May 29th. Staff training will be May 30th-June 2nd.
After camp cleanup day is July 31st.
Pay Range is between $18-$20/hour, plus lunch included daily during camp sessions.
Job Summary:
We are looking for a leader who will work with the Director on the oversight and management of camp day to day functioning. A leader who will bring their passion for camp programming to focus on the quality of our Camp Fire Curriculum, understand our Camp Fire mission, and overall community cohesion in Camp Fire programs. The Program Manager will be able to focus on maintaining and improving the operational and logistical aspects of all of camps programs while also using their flexibility and intelligence to keep the day-to-day of camp running. You can thrive as Program Manager if you find joy in consistently discovering areas of camp to improve order, function, ease, and smoothness.
Position Responsibilities:
- In support of the Camp Director; overseeing and running day camp operations
- Help implement the program schedule
- Program area needs, staffing needs, children/family needs
- Responsible to fill in covering all duties of Camp Director if Camp Director is away.
- It can look like planning or changing the schedules of staff and campers alike on the fly, chatting with campers about behavior/camper problems, communicating with families throughout the day, while keeping track of numerous, intertwining logistical factors
- Lead the planning and implementation of current programs as well as the creation and development of new programs for all summer sessions.
- Reporting staffing issues to the Camp Director
- Be able to communicate and interact with campers using developmentally appropriate language and using good customer service and judgement to communicate with guardians/parents.
- Making good sound decisions according to Camp Fire’s policies and procedures and best interest of campers, staff, guardians, Camp Fire, and everyone involved.
- Knowledge of youth development practices while working with ALL ages of campers.
- Be able to originate, change plans on the fly, organize and carry out daily/special programs
- Create and maintain a camp culture that is inclusive, kind, and supportive.
- Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff. Ensure that campers and camp staff know and follow safety precautions put in place.
- Maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with all camp staff, campers and staff.
- Assist in overall implementation of camp programs.
- Adhere to all Camp Fire Heartland and Camp Lake of the Woods policies and procedures.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Prior camp experience
- Minimum of 20 years of age.
- Prior experience managing schedules, programs, staff, and campers
- Knowledge of basic practices of youth development.
- A strong degree of initiative, flexibility and versatility
- Experienced, strategically minded, professional and capable individual
- Ability to handle the pressures that are associated when working with children with patience and self-control.
- Endurance including standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
- Ability to work in the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.
- Self-motivated, able to work independently or with a team.
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Prior supervisory experience
- Prior Management experience
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications (CPR and First Aid training offered during pre-camp staff training)
- Special/Unique talents or certifications to bring to specific activities
