Position Description:*
The Teacher Education (TE) and Urban Advantage (UA) family engagement coordinator is primarily responsible for supporting professional learning opportunities for teachers in the UA middle school program and coordinating UA family engagement initiatives. The position includes ongoing professional learning with a focus on science teaching and learning that aligns with NYS/NGSS, culturally responsive teaching, and differentiating instruction for diverse learners.
Responsibilities:

  • Develop and facilitate Parent Coordinator workshops with the guidance of the UA Family Outreach manager, and in concert with TE colleagues at Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG).
  • Contribute to planning and implementing middle school professional learning workshops with the UA program manager.
  • Coordinate and conduct Family Engagement Visits with UA schools (typically evenings or weekends).
  • Coordinate with BBG Visitor Services to enter data and track UA voucher use.
  • Take lead on planning and coordinating annual UA Family Science Day at BBG.
  • Attend monthly UA partner meetings, participate in additional UA events, workshops, and trainings, support UA lead teachers.
  • Teach online and in person; facilitate synchronous and asynchronous courses; build coursework and resources on the Moodle platform.
  • Participate in and support other BBG Education department programming and initiatives as needed.

Desired Qualifications:*

  • Formal or nonformal teaching experience
  • Experience with plants, horticulture, and/or botany
  • Fluency and comfort with written and spoken English
  • Ability to communicate effectively with different audiences, including teachers, colleagues at BBG and at peer institutions, families, and school administrators
  • Collaborative skills to work alongside other BBG colleagues and UA partners at peer institutions
  • Organizational skills including maintaining supplies, keeping track of participant data, and reporting on programming
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Experience providing professional learning a plus
  • Experience teaching science with living things a plus
  • Familiarity with the NGSS, NYC Science Scope and Sequence, Amplify Science, Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education and the CR-S Framework a plus
  • Experience teaching students with special needs, including students learning English and students with learning differences, a plus
  • Oral fluency in a second language a plus (especially Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, and Haitian Creole)

Work Environment:*

  • Some work takes place in busy indoor and outdoor public spaces such as classrooms, greenhouses, and Garden grounds.
  • Personal workspace is in an open-plan office shared with other Education department colleagues.
  • Work requires active and effective communication with BBG colleagues, UA partners, and UA teachers and administrators.

Salary Range – $45,489 - $52,312
