General Function:
Under minimal or no supervision, perform mechanical engineering tasks on fast-paced technology development programs. Collaborate with engineering peers, senior engineers, and program managers to help define project scope and perform project management tasks. Define, assess, and direct technical solutions for propulsion designs. Provide technical leadership and risk-based decision making to project teams. Lead development projects and work both independently and within a team to complete engineering tasks on schedule and budget. Communicate effectively to both teams and management to ensure tasks are accomplished and support others in accomplishing their assignments. Contribute to writing and reviewing technical documents including reports, test plans, and proposals.
Responsibilities:
1. Perform mechanical and system design and integration for high performance rocket propulsion systems
2. Design mechanical systems that manage high-temperature and high-pressure gasses
3. Perform preliminary rocket motor sizing and performance assessments
4. Perform design trade studies, identify risks, and perform Monte Carlo simulations
5. Create designs with CAD models and participate in design reviews
6. Conduct structural and thermal FEA analysis on rocket motor components and assemblies
7. Prepare and review engineering drawings, and conduct 1D and 2D tolerance analyses using geometric tolerancing
8. Participate in hardware assembly and testing activities
9. Peer review of mechanical designs, providing technical input for manufacturing, processing, assembly, and procurement
10. Perform project management functions; schedules, budgets, task assignments
11. Work directly with technicians and suppliers to assure engineering requirements are met
12. Interact with customers on technical matters
13. Participate in customer meetings and reviews by preparing and presenting technical material
14. Support technical and programmatic development during proposals.
15. Support HR and engineering management to assesses hiring and job assignment for junior engineers
16. Other related job duties, as assigned
Experience:
Required: Ten (10) years to 15 years of mechanical engineering experience is required; prefer rocket motor design and testing
Preferred: 15+ years of mechanical engineering experience is required; prefer rocket motor design and testing
Education:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or other related discipline from an accredited college/university. May consider equivalent experience in lieu of degree.
Preferred: Master’s degree or PhD in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or other related discipline from an accredited college/university. May consider equivalent experience in lieu of degree.
Skills:
· Experience with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Visio, Excel, and Project
· Experience with CAD software, SolidWorks preferred
· Experience with thermal and structural analysis, including FEA.
· Understanding of basic engineering project management and reporting
· Ability to manage other engineers and report program status to program office
· Proven ability to successfully operate in a highly collaborative team environment
· Possess excellent communication skills
· Willingness to seek-out and assume increasing responsibilities as workload changes
· Aptitude for working with propulsion, mechanical and electrical systems
Other:
· Ability to travel approximately 20% of the time
