Job Description
Vertex Cell & Gene Therapy (VCGT) is seeking a Translational Engineering Scientist to join the Device Synthesis group within Research & Development supporting the Type 1 Diabetes program. The full-time role will support innovation and research initiatives with a focus on developing and maintaining assembly robotics to drive device prototyping. Additionally, this role will work with the Senior Manager, Device Synthesis to supervise a small team that supports prototyping and manufacturing of all components and assembly of a novel cell-encapsulation device. The successful candidate will have strong engineering skills and experience in prototyping medical devices, as well as a demonstrable understanding of hardware integration and controls engineering. The individual will have strong leadership skills and be required to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment where communication and organization will be critical. The position is on-site and located in Providence, R.I
Activities:
- Work with Senior Manager to plan and coordinate daily tasks for technicians and activities of all prototyping operations with an ability to adapt to changing prototyping schedules and other dynamic priorities.
- Work cross-functionally with management, facilities, and supply chain to maintain operations and materials for an ISO 8 R&D prototyping cleanroom.
- Ability to provide timely feedback on designs, processes, and custom equipment used in routine prototyping, fabrication, and characterization.
- Author, maintain, and train others to all relevant process documentation, including Assembly, Inspection, Testing/In-Process Characterization, and Packaging Procedures.
- Manage the evaluation and selection of new equipment/technologies or modifications to existing systems to consider new processing technologies.
- Deploy incremental, highly specialized software and hardware updates to robotic prototypes.
- Perform ongoing repair and preventative maintenance of robotic equipment in an ISO 8 cleanroom.
- Troubleshooting of electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems.
- Ability to coach and train less experienced engineers.
- Optimize automated workflows for exploratory device prototyping.
- Provide support to non-engineering Staff, including those from CMC, to ensure successful technology transfer and continuous improvement.
- Manufacture and assemble medical device prototypes in an ISO 7/8 Environment, ensuring compliance with applicable standards.
- Review and approve Device History Records to ensure accuracy and enforce GDP.
Required Education and experience
- PhD (0-3 years industry experience), M.S. (3+ years industry experience); B.S. (6+ years industry experience) in Robotics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, or related field.
- Coding experience in C++, Python, Epson, LabVIEW, Java, Bash, or similar language, especially pertaining to hardware and imbedded control; ability to learn new programming languages as needed.
- Experience working with a variety of automation hardware, including but not limited to, custom-fabricated mechanical components, EPSON robotics, Universal Robotics, PC-based systems, Siemens PLC and related control system components, automated process instrumentation.
- Experience engineering implantable medical devices with GMPs.
- Demonstrated excellence in instrumentation and interfacing development.
- The ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage priorities, and maintain timelines for multiple activities.
- Sense of urgency, ability to act/escalate promptly, and transparently communicate issues to involved stakeholders and management.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills with ability to effectively communicate with multiple teams.
- Supervisory experience is a plus.
- 3D CAD software (such as Solidworks) is a plus.
- Experience with Six Sigma, Design for Manufacturability, and DMAIC is a plus.
