JOB SUMMARY
The primary function of this position is to transport the elderly, disabled, veteran, or transportation disadvantaged to and from their destination in a safe, timely, courteous, and efficient manner.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Transports clients to and from their destination throughout Monroe County in accordance with manifest and/or instructions from Dispatch.
  • Studies manifest and reports any discrepancies/changes/suggestions/etc. to Dispatch.
  • Inspects van, car, bus, wheelchair lift (if equipped), safety equipment, etc., for safety on a daily basis in accordance with the FDOT pre and post trip inspections as required.
  • Assists passengers into and out of vehicle AND assists passengers with their groceries, packages, etc., as needed.
  • Makes sure correct fare is collected from each passenger for each
trip AND ensures that correct fare is calculated at the end of each day via the fare envelope, if applicable.
  • Loads/unloads and properly secures wheelchairs in accordance with all acceptable safety protocols.
  • Reports by 2‐way radio to Dispatch at the time of each pick‐up and drop off.
  • Keeps mileage records and reports same to Dispatch.
  • Maintains cleanliness of vehicle daily.
  • Completes paperwork as required and assigned.
  • Delivers materials and other items as needed by and for the county.
  • Transports vehicles to and from the garage for repair, fuel, preventative maintenance, cleaning, etc.
  • Performs pre and post storm-related duties and other job related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED required. Six (6) months minimum prior related driving experience.
Special Qualifications:
  • CPR and First Aid certifications are contractually required for this position within first 90 days of employment. CDL with passenger endorsement required to drive FDOT passenger buses. This position is subject to the mandatory Florida Department of Transportation drug testing program which involves random drug testing. Safety sensitive position. Must be able to pass Level II background screening.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to have guidelines for work but determine the approach for doing the work.
  • Ability to perform work that necessitates some specialized knowledge of clerical or trades‐based tasks. Some of the typical responsibilities include gathering, formatting, or visually analyzing data OR operating equipment (passenger vehicles/passenger buses).
  • Ability to follow specific procedures that may result in interaction with co‐workers, citizens, or other individuals.
  • Ability to make a few decisions regarding activities and priorities.
  • Ability to work with more than ten co‐workers who are mostly engaged in the same activities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is not sedentary. It involves driving a paratransit vehicle each shift, moving in and out of the vehicle, assisting passengers in and out of the vehicle, loading and unloading wheelchairs, and exerting up to 50 pounds of force regularly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary movement and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position‐to‐position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to move, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers or citizens accurately and concisely.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Visual Acuity: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
