Position Information


TxDOT's Dallas District Traffic Projects Office Team is looking for a Transportation Engineer II, III, or IV based in Mesquite, TX.

Using TxDOT and Dallas District guidelines, the Traffic Projects Office Team is responsible for reviewing preliminary construction plans and supporting documents, operating and maintaining the District's traffic signal network, creating traffic signal timing plans, and overseeing plans for traffic signal upgrades and new technology. The team provides comments to both in-house and consultant plans and works with those designers to resolve comments. The Team is instrumental in ensuring that the District's traffic signal network operates in an efficient manner. A typical work day can be fast-paced and will vary from office to outdoor environments. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of basic traffic signal design and operations.

Position Description


Performs complex to highly advanced transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Engineer II: Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

  • Responsible for Railroad operations.
  • Responsible for Traffic Engineering operations.
  • Responsible for Traffic Systems Management.
  • Coordinates traffic engineering studies and traffic counts.
  • Meets with law enforcement agencies and/or city officials to discuss traffic problems and possible solutions.
  • Troubleshoots electronic systems.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Transportation Engineer III: Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are
rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

All duties shown above and additional duties include:

  • Performs advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications,
    estimates and contracts.
  • Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and/or plan development.

Transportation Engineer IV: Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

All duties shown above and additional duties include:

  • Oversees the development and support of transportation operations systems.
  • Serves as a project manager overseeing consultants performing advanced and complex engineering work.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications



Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer*
  • If performing underwater bridge inspections: Must have Open Water Diver certification.
  • For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire.
  • Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Design, construction, and operations experience related to traffic signals and closed-loop networks
  • Design and construction experience related to roadway illumination systems


Competencies:

  • Construction, operation and maintenance of traffic control devices
  • Traffic management system operations
  • Geometric design relationships to traffic operations, maintenance and construction
  • Applicable testing methods, processes and procedures
  • Traffic signal systems design, testing and maintenance operations
  • Schematic electrical wiring
  • Applicable laws, rules, and regulations

Expert skill in

  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and
    external
  • Applying engineering principles, practices and methods in job responsibilities

Proficient skill in

  • Troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining equipment of the trade
  • Maintaining a safe working relationship


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Required to wear protective hard hat, FR clothing, steel-toe footwear or other devices
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25lbs
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
