TxDOT's Special Crew Maintenance Office is looking for a Transportation Crew Chief I in El Paso, TX. As a Crew Chief, you will lead a crew of Transportation Maintenance Technicians. Coordinate equipment, materials, and personnel for roadway maintenance projects and work closely with the maintenance section supervisor.

Position Description


Performs skilled transportation maintenance activities and leads a crew of Transportation Maintenance Technicians. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief I essential duties include:

  • Serves as a lead worker
  • Drives to assist during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets
  • Operates light and heavy equipment
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment
  • Troubleshoots problems
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Work Experience: 5 years roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must have a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application.

Competencies:

  • Methods procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Incident management procedures.
  • Inventory/stock control procedures
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specifications codes.
  • Methods and procedures involving storage & transport of hazardous material.
  • Use of light and heavy highway equipment
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment.
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Sitting - prolonged periods of time.
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
  • Stooping - bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to rest on knee(s)
  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by ending spine at waist.
  • Crawling-moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time.
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another.
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position.
  • Talking-expressing 0or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication.
  • Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.

  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
