United Community Schools Initiative

United Community Schools (UCS) is a not-for-profit organization created in 2012 by the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) with support from the Partnership for New York City, the New York State Senate, the New York City Council, and Trinity Wall Street. UCS facilitates partnerships between schools, non-profits, business and government to integrate vital services into public school buildings, improve student achievement and meet the health, safety and social service needs of students and communities. UCS is designed to benefit entire neighborhoods by transforming public schools into community “hubs” in an effort to meet the needs of students, families, and community members. Each “hub” is unique as the scope of programs and services in a United Community Schools is established through parent, educator, and community consensus on the needs of the school and community. United Community Schools services may include medical, dental, and mental health programs; art, music, and recreation programs; social services; parent programs; or youth empowerment activities.

Position Description

The UCS seeks an experienced candidate to serve as Program Manager, a full-time position reporting to the Director of School Support. The UCS is a fast-growing initiative and the ideal candidate is an energetic, entrepreneurial individual that can successfully work in a start-up environment. The Program Manager will drive and grow our relationships with key UCS partners and support a portfolio of UCS schools. In addition, the Program Manager will provide capacity-building efforts and technical assistance for Community School Directors and school-based teams, including our School Advisory Boards. Given the broad diversity of UCS’s partners (with nonprofits/community based organizations, corporations and public agencies) a substantial focus for this role is developing the strategy to maximize UCS’s success with each UCS school uniquely. A successful candidate will have demonstrated exceptional performance in program management, an outsized passion for innovation, highly self-motivated, love of autonomy, fearless thirst for challenge, and a maniacal focus on customer success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise a cohort of Community School Directors (CSDs)

– Assist with the hiring, onboarding and training of CSDs

– Meet weekly with CSDs to discuss goals for the week and provide overall support

– Provide feedback on CSDs performance and suggest corrective feedback once a concern is observed

– Establish regular meetings with Principals to discuss goals and outcomes set for CSD and to address any outstanding concerns

– Support and help coordinate CSDs professional development

– Provide support to CSDs during weekend/evening events

  • Provide technical support and direction to school teams, including School Advisory Boards on the UCS strategy

– Onboarding new schools, CSDs or Administration on model & deliverables – Review AB agendas prior to meetings and debrief the meetings with CSDs

– Attend monthly AB meetings

– Regularly share UCS updates and relevant UFT initiatives, and encourage CSDs to use UFT resources to help facilitate the model

– Help CSDs troubleshoot, navigate relationships with school leadership, CBO partners, and hold regular accountability meetings with partners 50 Broadway, 15th Floor | New York, NY 10004 | www.nyccls.org

– Aid school teams in leveraging current partnerships to address unrelated areas of expertise Assist in the development of benchmarks and clearly defined goals to drive the initiative

– Review and approve UCS workplans to ensure alignment between the goals and program offerings and the school’s CEP

– Support CSDs in interpreting and gathering data to steer programing and student interventions Support CSDs with grant management and implementation at each school – Ensure that AB teams are actively involved in the decision making around grant funded supports and the overall UCS strategy

– Ensure that funding requirements are met

– Assist school teams with the provider selection process, ensuring that programs offered to schools are effective and seamlessly integrated

– Help CSDs navigate the grant paperwork submission process

– Review and approve grant budget(s), spending paperwork, and grant requests, and assist in the process (if needed) Support the implementation and refinement of the UCS Strategy

– Assist UCS leadership to refine the program strategy and contribute to the local and national community school efforts

– Present at public speaking engagements, conferences and workshops to promote the UCS initiative

– Liaise with community-based organizations, program and service providers, elected officials, city agencies, academic and corporate partners if needed at the school level

  • Implement special projects according to program and/or department needs to identify best practices and highlight new innovations for the organization to reach its goals
  • Contribute to UCS learning culture through actively and knowledgeably sharing program challenges and accomplishments, using both data and information gained from regular interactions with partners, and current educational issues at large.

Preferred Skills / Qualifications

The UCS Program Manager role requires a comprehensive knowledge of community schools and school transformation strategies, most of which will be obtained through a combination of formal education and work experience. The Program Manager must be able to work well as a team member and independently, and may be called upon to provide services, guidance or advice to others.

  • Master’s Degree preferred, with 2-3 years of experience in a related field (education, youth development, nonprofit management, social work, public administration, urban/community planning); Bachelor’s degree is required plus a minimum of five years of experience in a relevant field.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the New York City public school system and successful, national school-based interventions for community schools
  • Ability and unwavering desire to be a team player/coach and lead by example
  • Minimum 7-years professional experience
  • Substantial nonprofit management or project/program management experience as well as knowledge of organizational development
  • Excellent writing, communications, management and interpersonal skills
  • Creative thinker, with a track record of translating strategic thinking into action plans and outputs
