Overview:
HKS is seeking an Urban Planning Professional to join our team.
Supports project teams using a wide range of developing professional skills. Performs basic design and technical tasks requiring application of standard techniques and knowledge while working under general supervision. Eager to learn, highly organized and willing to contribute creatively to the team.
Responsibilities:
- Modifies or creates design documents, applying urban design and planning principles to spatial frameworks at a variety of scales
- Conducts preliminary site research, field work, collects parcel data and searches land records using GIS software to inform design strategies.
- Performs routine urban design and planning assignments and may have some design responsibility collaborating with other team members as designated
- Assignments may include higher-level work for training/development purposes
- May attend on-site visits, field reviews and client and/or project meetings as appropriate
- May assist in preparing proposals, presentations, schedules, maps, planning reports and processing of implementation documentation
- Evaluates or assists in the evaluation of zoning ordinances / rezonings, ordinance amendments, site plans, special use permits, variances and other proposals as applicable to master planning projects
- May participate in communication with other disciplines, consultants, vendors and contractors to incorporate information into project requirements
- Participates in team meetings to discuss project issues, design and technical issues and coordination with other disciplines
- May assist in facilitating in-person and virtual public participation activities
- Researches funding sources and writes grant proposals related to city comprehensive plans, federal transportation allocations, etc.
Qualifications:
- Accredited professional degree in Urban Planning Architecture, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, or related field
- On the path to Urban Planning License (AICP by APA) or other professional license
- Typically with 0-3 years of experience
- Sustainable design specific accreditation preferred such as LEED ND or Ecodistricts AP, or within one year of hire
- Specific knowledge relating to pertinent specialty, such as affordable housing, transportation, land use, environmental planning, urban design, historic preservation or economic development is desired
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Knowledge of architectural software such as Revit, Rhino, SketchUp, and other 3D modeling preferred
- Knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) software such as ArcGIS or QGIS highly preferred
- Knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign graphic software preferred
- Knowledge of computational design (Grasshopper) and relevant plugins preferred
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite preferred
- Knowledge of sustainability and integrated design guidelines
- Ability to communicate in a clear, concise, and professional manner both verbally and in writing
- Ability to problem solve and collaborate on innovative solutions
- Ability to work in team environment
- Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time
- Ability to effectively meet deadlines at expected quality
- Travel may be required
