US Media Relations Manager Job at Klarna

We are looking for a communications manager with a passion and flair for day to day media relations to join Klarna’s Global Media Response Team.
You will play a key role in building Klarna’s global brand through development and deployment of one consistent and compelling global narrative, and management of US media across external channels on all key topics to build understanding of our business, beliefs, products and services.

You will work with the business to advise on the best communications approach for business, product or operational decisions and ensure all communications materials protect and build our reputation. You will be part of a high-performing global team responsible for Klarna’s press operations, handling global media responses for US reporters, quickly fact checking coverage and correcting inaccurate stories by deploying robust rebuttals to ensure fair and accurate reporting of Klarna, so our definitive company position is understood by external audiences. You will be part of the team defining global company responses to key topics and updating messaging and data points that tell our company story for use externally.

You will work closely with the company management and cross-functionally across communications, marketing, merchant, product and customer services teams to collaborate on messaging, product news, and our services. You will be an excellent writer with an ability to understand and turn complex propositions and business changes into simple communications and succinct and sharp statements so that Klarna’s global story is understood by all audiences. You will be developing and building strong relationships with US media in order to help shape stories and achieve balance and accuracy of Klarna coverage.

What you will do:

    • Play a crucial role in driving accuracy and balanced reporting of Klarna through real time media monitoring, fact checking articles, and rebutting inaccurate stories to advance the company's narrative and influence across the US, our fastest growing market.
    • Be part of the global press office; day to day media relations, developing sharp written response and rebuttals, Q&A, social content, arranging interviews, engaging with media, and tracking and measuring coverage.
    • Read, analyze, and summarize media coverage on topics related to Klarna, the business, and wider industry.
    • Work with EU and UK colleagues to ensure 24/7 media monitoring, leveraging timezone benefits.
    • Stay informed on the Global news cycle and write news summaries for the business.
    • Stay up to date on complex issues facing the company, helping to fix any issues that impact our reputation and deliver insights accordingly.
    • Proactively define and craft messages on topics relevant to Klarna’s business as they arise.
    • Work closely with global comms colleagues to ensure consistent use of narrative and key messaging.
    • Ability to move between multiple audiences and contexts in a deft manner.
    • Maintain and nurture strong relationships with US top tier media.
    • Use knowledge of US media market to guide and shape global messaging and responses, balancing local and global needs ensuring Klarna maintains a consistent narrative.
    • You will have sound judgment to mitigate potential negative news cycles and be able to proactively plan around known risks.
    • Escalate any emerging topics across media and social media to ensure the business resolves any customer, product or service issues, working with internal stakeholders to drive through changes where necessary.
    • Though you will largely manage US media, you will be part of a global team responsible for global media management, so the role requires someone able to learn about new markets quickly and actively contribute to global earned, owned and commercial media strategies.
    • Part of press office weekend duty work rotation.

Who you are

    • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, with strong copywriting abilities.
    • Passionate about media relations and not afraid to get on the phone to seek corrections, build understanding of complex topics or discuss nuanced business decisions / operations.
    • Proven skill and passion in proactively building and nurturing relationships with media, and in successfully generating top tier favorable media coverage as well as the ability to mitigate negative stories and media cycles.
    • Analytical and able to spot inaccuracies in articles and quickly find or create best rebuttals.
    • Excellent judgment and decision-making capability, including spotting issues early, knowing which issues impact reputation, which issues will likely generate a media cycle, when to escalate, how to prioritize, and crafting appropriate media and customer responses.
    • You act as a trusted communications consultant on media matters to senior leadership and you know what is right for our business and our customers, and are not afraid of seeking changes to internal policies and processes to ensure the right outcomes.
    • You have a ‘can do’ positive attitude, are very organized and are deeply collaborative, and enjoy working as part of a global cross-functional team.
    • Proven experience working in a busy press office for a consumer facing or technology brand operating in the public spotlight and under scrutiny, managing complex issues.
    • Experience working for a business operating in an evolving regulatory environment is a plus.
    • Can operate within ambiguous environments, extremely flexible and adaptable with excellent problem solving abilities to drive the company forward with minimum guidance. Experience owning multiple deliverables, ability to prioritize and work in a fast paced environment.
    • Detail oriented and able to develop processes for more efficient, scalable ways of working.
    • Experience of how to report on day-to-day media handling to internal stakeholders as well as showcasing the wider impact of communications to an internal audience.
    • Not afraid to be challenged, open to feedback and enjoy stepping out of your comfort zone.
    • You are proactive and hands-on by nature and come up with new thinking and solutions adding value and innovation to our work.
