Job Duties

To provide support to the DWR’s Watchable Wildlife Program, on a statewide level, with a primary emphasis on creating new and compelling written and visual content for the Virginia Bird & Wildlife Trail online guide. This position will primarily work from a home office, but will meet occasionally with their supervisor at their supervisor’s office in Virginia Beach and/or at the Agency’s headquarters in Henrico. Anticipated work hours will range between 30 - 40 hours per week

Minimum Qualifications

A college graduate in Wildlife Biology; Zoology; Environmental Science; Natural Resources; Parks, Recreation, and Tourism; Environmental Behavior, Education, and Communication; or a related field.
Previous work experience with nature-based tourism/ ecotourism and marketing are desirable. Experience conveying scientific information to broad audiences.
Experience writing and developing visual content for webpages, printed brochures, newsletters, social media, or similar formats.
Previous experience that entailed multi-tasking, paying attention to detail, and organizational skills.
Experience reaching logical conclusions from interpreting information, communications, or policies.
Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills and email correspondence skills, and be able to work well with co-workers, partners, volunteers, vendors, and the public.
Previous experience working independently with minimal supervision and has experience that demonstrates organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
Prior experience working with volunteers and/or partners in the completion of tasks.
Experience with data entry, word-processing, computer programs (MS Windows, Word, Excel) is required.
Experience with either the basic use of ArcGIS or basic computer programing is also required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of birds and other wildlife, particularly those found in Virginia, or the Eastern US is highly desirable and preferred.
Experience with birding and wildlife viewing, especially in Virginia or the Eastern US, is also highly desirable and preferred.
Experience with hiking, and/or exploring parks and natural areas, particularly in Virginia is desirable.
Experience working with WordPress and interpreting eBird data and I Naturalist data is desirable. Comfortable with moderate hiking, navigating park trails, and occasional overnight travel.
