Position: Visitor Experience and Museum Facility Coordinator
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Executive Director
General Summary:
Under the direction of the Executive Director of the National Shrine, the
Visitor Experience and Museum Facility Coordinator is responsible for ensuring pilgrims and visitors to the Shrine Museum have a positive educational experience. As a small museum, this position also serves as the “point person” to coordinate museum facility maintenance and care of the objects on display. This position will be collaborating with the Coordinator for Pilgrimages; and the Director of Archives & Records Management, who provides registrar, exhibit, and educational support to the Shrine Museum.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Greets museum visitors/pilgrims with a friendly disposition and hospitable attitude.
- Coordinates the weekly volunteer docent schedule to ensure the museum and Shrine Church are covered at all times from open to close.
- Collaborates with the Director of Archives & Records Management to develop a volunteer docent training program.
- Trains docents and volunteers with approved material.
- Collaborates with the Director of Archives & Records Management to develop cyclical docent/staff education programs to support their continuing education.
- Assists the Coordinator of Pilgrimages to ensure docents are available for tours and education programs as needed.
- Monitors care of the museum facility with the Executive Director and maintenance staff.
- Collaborates and assists with the Shrine maintenance staff to keep a high level of cleanliness in the museum exhibit space and monitoring climate/environmental conditions.
- Assists the Coordinator of Pilgrimages and Executive Director to prepare the Shrine for major annual events.
- Assists with volunteer recruitment, as directed, including working extra days or hours for special events as needed.
- Ensures handouts are available in the Shrine and Museum.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Coursework or experience in a museum environment. Internships are acceptable.
- A basic understanding of post-contact Spanish history as relates to St. Augustine and Florida.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team. Ability to work well with a variety of people from various backgrounds and cultures. Mature, friendly, good-humored, and service-oriented.
- Effective and exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- General computer skills, including proficiency with accessing internet, email.
- Creativity and orientation towards problem-solving.
- Ability to demonstrate and maintain a high level of customer service.
- Flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays for events is required.
- Must be able to lift boxes of up to 20 pounds
- Ability to spend more than 50% of the typical workday walking, sitting, and standing.
- Ability to maintain a professional attitude and appearance that positively represents the Catholic Church.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree or higher in museum studies, history, local history, or a closely related field.
- Knowledge of collections best practices, preventative conservation techniques, environmental control, pest management, security, objects/collections insurance and risk management.
- Fluency in Spanish preferred.
- A proficient knowledge of post-contact Spanish history as relates to St. Augustine and Florida.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, vendors, employees, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
