The Department of Juvenile Justice is actively seeking Food Service Workers to prepare food for residents and staff following the master menu guidelines, maintain kitchens and dining hall cleanliness, and adhere to sanitation and safety protocols. As a Food Service Worker, you will: follow guidelines to ensure appropriate serving temperatures and adequate portion control are met, cook and prepare food according to established procedures and standardized recipes, and perform preparation duties such as rinsing, peeling, slicing, and dicing meats, fruits, and vegetables. You will be responsible for serving residents and staff in a timely, efficient, and professional manner, following preparation and serving schedules for all meals and snacks daily and completing all daily paperwork accurately, thoroughly, and in a timely matter, and complying with relevant safety, hygiene and service standards, and procedures. You will have the opportunity to supervise and train the residents working in the kitchen and dining hall.

Work alternative hours such as the following:
  • 4:30 am to 4:30 pm – one hour break
  • 4:30 am to 1:00 pm – 30 minute break
  • 5:00 am to 5:00 pm – one hour break
  • 5:00 am to 1:30 pm – 30 minute break
  • 6:00 am to 5:00 pm – one hour break
  • 7:00 am to 5:00 pm – one hour break


You play an integral part of the daily operation such as the following:
  • Assist with paperwork
  • Loading and unloading food and supplies
  • Checking in deliveries
  • Transporting food and supplies
  • Conducting sanitation tasks
  • Preparing meal items
  • Cooking meal items
  • Serving meals
  • Packing meals items
  • Filling in during staff training, call outs and vacation time

Note: Wage Food Service Technicians work 29 hours per week and every other weekend off.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of correct methods of storage and inventory. Knowledge of correct nutritional standards and how they are enforced. Demonstrated ability to forecast needs for food products and fully utilize any leftover foods. Ability to supervise residents working in the kitchen and dining hall. Ability to read, write, follow and give directions. Document temperatures of food being prepared, served and equipment.

Special Requirements
Some VADJJ positions may require working shift work, overtime, holiday, and weekends. Mandatory training such as the Department of Juvenile Justice’s Basic Skills for Security must be completed.
