2023 Conservation Connect Fellowship Program with Practicum Job at National Forest Foundation

National Forest Foundation Remote

The National Forest Foundation (NFF) invites master’s and doctoral students to apply to the Conservation Connect Fellowship Program. Conservation Connect Fellowships aim to build experience, knowledge, and skills within the next generation of collaborative and conservation leaders to support each other and advance the field. We are striving to build a cohort of emerging professionals who will go on to do important work with communities and public lands in the future! Do you want to match the knowledge you are acquiring through your academic work with practical, hands-on experience and contribute directly to collaborative stewardship of our National Forests?
Here’s what you will gain by being a Conservation Connect Fellow:

  • Applied experience with conservation programs and projects through a practicum project. For example, depending on the project, fellows may conduct stakeholder assessments; facilitate collaborative efforts; coordinate and implement projects; support diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts; or develop strategic communications.
  • Mentoring from skilled conservation professionals at the NFF and other host organizations.
  • Trainings in collaborative conservation, facilitation practice, the roles of the National Environmental Policy Act and U.S. Forest Service, and other topics.
  • Real-world understanding of forest and public lands management.
  • An expanded personal and professional network.

Fellowships include a summer 2023 or academic year 2023-2024 practicum, or some combination of the two, and may be at a specific location or virtual depending on the project. Fellows will be compensated at a rate of $18/hour for up to 360 hours over the one-year fellowship.
The NFF will accept applications through February 5, 2023. Please see the Conservation Connect Fellows webpage for more information, including 2023 practicum project descriptions.
The National Forest Foundation welcomes a diverse pool of applicants and maintains a policy of nondiscrimination.
To apply:
The Conservation Connect Fellowship application has five components: a cover letter, résumé, and personal statement (questionnaire); a brief survey to indicate project preference; and one letter of recommendation (emailed separately). Applications that do not include all components will not be considered.

  • Cover Letter: In one page, describe in a compelling narrative your interest in being a Conservation Connect Fellow and how your studies and career plans fit the intent of the fellowship.
  • Personal Statement: In 250 words or less for each response, please answer all three prompts in the questionnaire.
  • Résumé of academic and professional experience.
  • Practicum Selection Form: Please read the 2023 project descriptions and then rank your choice of practicum projects using this form.
  • Letter of Recommendation (submitted separately): The fellowship application requires one letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the student’s academic program. The letter must address the merits of the applicant and their fit for this fellowship. The NFF requests the letter writer email a signed copy of their letter directly to conservationconnect@nationalforests.org by February 5, 2023, with FELLOWSHIP and the applicant’s name in the subject line.
