AmeriCorps Guam Waterworks Authority (GWA) members promote environmental awareness through education, training and outreach about the GWA Fats-Oil-Grease (FOG) Best Management Practices Program, Affordability & Water Conservation Assessment Program, and the Septic Tank Elimination Outreach Program. Members work with the community throughout the island’s 19 villages, students, government of Guam agencies and non-profit entities to increase knowledge of how FOG's improper disposal can affect our homes and public health, how GWA’s sewer system protects the aquifer, and how water leaks can cause financial hardship, structural damage and waste a life-giving environmental resource. Member and volunteer work aims to discourage existing behavior that is harmful to the environment. Members also provide disaster service trainings and presentations to the community in preparing, responding, recovering, and mitigating man-made or natural disasters such as typhoons, floods, coastal erosion, wildfire, tsunamis, and earthquakes, as well as help organizations build capacity to expand services and increase awareness through volunteer recruitment.
