ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.

· Supervises and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals

· Recruits adult or junior volunteer workers. Interprets and enforces animal control laws/ordinances and all other applicable laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures

· Ensures staff adherence to established safety procedures.

· Monitors work environment and the use of safety equipment to ensure the safety of employees and other individuals

· Initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations

· Issues citations to violators of animal control ordinances.

· Consults with the Board of Directors to periodically review division operations/activities, review/resolve problems, receive advice/directions, and provide recommendations

· Submits periodic operational reports to the Board of Directors.

· Develops, updates, and implements standard operating procedures and internal procedures pertaining to the animal shelter.

· Oversees and coordinates financial operations for the division.

· Works with the Board of Directors for the review and administration of the division budget.

· Reviews revenues received from animal adoptions, fines, rabies vaccination programs, reclaims, donations, and fundraising projects.

· Responsible for securing and managing grants, donations, and fundraising events.

· Provides information, education, and assistance to the public concerning state/local animal control ordinances, licensing responsibilities, humane treatment and care of animals, animal behavior problems, or other related issues.

· Coordinates public relations activities, media programs, and newspaper articles pertaining to animals at the shelter

· Presents programs and conducts tours for school students; distributes informational brochures; takes appropriate action on complaints; mediates/resolves citizen disputes.

· Manages and/or responds to incoming calls or complaints concerning various animal issues such as animal bites, potential animal cruelty/abuse, animals in distress, stray/nuisance animals, barking dogs, wild/dangerous/vicious animals, sick/injured animals, animal behavior problems, or animal control laws and ordinances.

· May prosecute violators and present cases in court, as appropriate.

· Oversees and may assist in conducting investigations into animal complaints.

· Loads/unloads animals into or out of cages.

· Transports animals to veterinarian offices, animal shelters, or other locations.

· Ensures proper care of animals during field activities.

· Responsible for narcotics in the Animal Shelter.

· May set and monitor animal traps.

· May remove deceased animals from the roadway.

· Coordinates and assists veterinarians’ routine and emergency medical care and surgical procedures performed at the animal shelter.

· Work may include the administration of medication, tranquilizers, euthanasia, or other drugs.

· Operates a personal computer, general office equipment, two-way radio, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, bookkeeping, email, Internet, or other computer programs

· Performs basic maintenance of computer system and general office equipment, such as backing up data or replacing paper, ink, or toner.

· Coordinates service/repair activities as needed.

· Operates various machinery, equipment, and tools associated with animal control activities, such as a vehicle, animal restraint equipment, animal traps, cages, snare poles, nets, tranquilizer guns, autoclave, medical equipment/tools, cleaning equipment, mechanical tools, and radio communications equipment.

· Performs general/preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep animal control vehicles, equipment, and tools in clean and operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, washing/cleaning trucks or equipment, and cleaning work areas

· Monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety.

· Oversees and monitors statistical data pertaining to shelter operations, such as adoptions, reclaims, vaccinations, and euthanizations.

· analyzes data and identifies trends. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, budget documents, purchase requisitions, statistical reports, performance appraisals, animal intake records, animal reclaim forms, adoption papers, citations, veterinarian contracts, animal inventory records, newspaper copy, inventory records, medical logs, vehicle maintenance records, or other documents.

· Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, animal inventory records, time sheets, job applications, payments, invoices, budget reports, bite reports, police reports, complaints, citation records, maps, policies, procedures, laws, ordinances, medical books, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation.

· Communicates with supervisor, employees, volunteers, other departments, town officials, law enforcement personnel, public safety agencies, other animal control agencies, veterinarians, community organizations, schools, the media, court personnel, attorneys, vendors, customers, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review the status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or to give/receive advice or direction.

· Maintains confidentiality of departmental documentation and issues.

· Maintains comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations.

· Maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession.

· Reads professional literature.

· Maintains professional affiliations.

· Attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.

· Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $32,000.00 per year
