Anti-Hunger Corps Interfaith Sustainable Food Collaborative Job at AmeriCorps
The Interfaith Food offers VISTA's the opportunity to build sustainable food systems by working with the faith community. The VISTA’s will serve as part of a small team including up to 2 VISTA’s focusing on helping low-income people in Sonoma, Marin, Alameda San Francisco and Contra Costa counties access healthy local food. Each position will have a different primary focus: community gardens and farms; and marketing relationships between farms and faith-groups through CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), produce stands; and institutional procurement. The VISTA’s work in a dynamic, fluid environment within a 10 year old organization. They develop skills in: grant writing, program development; community outreach, and evaluation. The program is part of a partnership with Hunger Free America. Hunger Free America (HFA), in conjunction with Interfaith Sustainable Food Collaborative in Sebastopol, CA is in its 3rd year of the Anti-Hunger Corps (AHC), an AmeriCorps VISTA program that places members at agencies nationwide. This program engages VISTA members and partnering organizations in moving families beyond the soup kitchen by breaking down barriers and providing improved access to healthful, nutritious foods. The AHC VISTA program aims to address hunger, poverty, and build the capacity of the agencies that address these issues. Members will assist unemployed and under-employed people obtain job training, job placement, and financial literacy services; improve access to food from government and nonprofit sources for targeted populations in particular and food insecure people in general; enable residents of food deserts to access healthier foods through farmers markets and community gardens; grow the number of low-income children able to obtain free school breakfasts and summer meals; and recruit and manage more volunteers, particularly high-impact, skilled volunteers.

Member Duties : Seeking two VISTAs for Sebastopol, CA- a Community Farm and Garden VISTA and a Community Food Access Program VISTA. They will share models and lessons learned on how congregations and farmers can partner to create gardens, farms and farm marketing outlets that supply fresh produce to low income people; promote opportunities to access local food at farm marketing outlets by utilizing SNAP, Pandemic EBT, WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program and the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program to low-income individuals affiliated with or neighboring faith-based groups. VISTAs will spend significant time on Program Development including project design, research and grant writing. The VISTA will be part of a team of up to 2 VISTA’s hosted at Interfaith Food. Each position will have a different primary focus, with a leadership role; and also work as part of a team for larger outreach and events including ISFC's annual conference. Positions offered in partnership with Hunger Free America.
