The Assistant Controller supports the University Assistant Vice President and Controller in managing the financial operations of University Accounting and Property Records department. This role is responsible for participating in the preparation, analysis and review of all financial reports and audit schedules. This position oversees the recordation of the costs of newly acquired assets, disposals and additions and capital projects. The Assistant Controller directly supervises the activities of the fixed asset accountant and Property records department while overseeing work of other accountants within University Accounting. Telework may be available for this position up to two days per week following the completion of 90 days of service in good standing.
- Review and prepare interim and year-end audit and financial schedules with emphasis on Capital projects and fixed assets. Analyze USM supplied data for accuracy and reconcile PeopleSoft reports to USM system. Assist in management and creation of documentation for audit review.
- Supervise Fixed asset accountant and manage the operations of Property records. Identify and resolve problems in relation to daily/monthly accounting activities and improve business processes as needed.
- Responsible for oversight of Property records activities ensuring that tagging and costing of capital assets greater than $5,000 and computers is appropriate. Oversee and verify the running of depreciation for interim and year-end reporting and analyze data for accuracy. Maintain and update all capital and computer inventory on a bi-annual basis.
- Analyze and review general ledger reconciliations and work with all accountants to resolve and implement corrective actions. Prepare yearly portion of Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. Supply and report on financial data for Middle States, IPEDS, NCAA Audit, Peterson Surveys, and any special requests for financial reporting outside of the year-end reporting.
- Responsible for identification of Projects requiring capitalization. Communicate and coordinate with Facilities Management and the University Budget Office on Project classification, project cost sheets, reporting of actual expenses, and determine if capitalization threshold is met.
- Responsible for maintaining and tracking all aspects of Endowment Funds. Record investment income, spendable income, and fees in General Ledger system. Analyze USM data and reconcile to GL. Prepare Endowment report for Towson Foundation.
- Help implement new GASB standards as required by USM.
- Work, advise and communicate with campus departments and outside agencies to resolve issues regarding accounting issues including but not limited to Deposit Management System and R*Stars.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Economics. Advanced accounting knowledge in GAAP and GASB standards, financial statement preparation, and Capital project accounting.
- Analytical ability as well as excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Five years of related accounting experience, with two years of progressive management and direct supervision experience.
Preferred education:
- MBA or master’s degree in accounting finance. CPA or CPA candidate.
